Torridon Primary School is a small rural school with 7 pupils ranging from P1 to P6 • I teach 2 days a week as the management support teacher • This term we have chosen the subject of homes and homecoming as our project – the challenge for me is to develop this into a project using development education approaches and activities • Quick sharing of thoughts to spark ideas…here goes
RME • Looking at Journeys • Abraham and Sarah across the desert (Judaism) • Prodigal Son returning home and story of house made on rock/sand (Christianity) • Hajj (Islam) • Pilgrimage – Lourdes, Santiago, Rome, Bethlehem (Christianity)
RME links and ideas • Discussions – what makes home, why leave, why does religion have so much travelling in it, life as a journey • Pack your bags, what would you take, what is important to you • ICT research follow links from HVLC • Story meanings and reflection – for parables and other stories from other religions Sure you can think of more!
Refugees • Looking at refugee stories/pictures (one Day we had to Run – Save the Children) – why are they leaving their homes, how would they be feeling, have you ever moved home, packing. • If a refugee family came to Torridon what should we do if anything….
Refugee statistics (Maths, problem solving, data analysis) – countries who have most refugees have something in common – they are poor • Treatment of refugees in this country • Stories of settlement and positive living • ICT research – UNHCR, Oxfam etc
Onwards and upwards… • Looking at Scottish migration and reasons – Nova Scotia, Australia etc • Homes – photo project with making of own books about our homes • Buildings – caravans, tents (Mongolian yurts), timber, brick – sustainability, global footprints • Using Compass Rose to assess impacts and discussions, pair/trios, picture and written feedback for presentations etc, explore issues from papers (current Sri Lankan refugees, Afghanistan, Palestine and ….) • Link into other areas of curriculum – writing, problem solving, maths, reading, speaking and listening, art work, history and social sciences, enterprise – fair trade and refugee made products,
