  2. Today’s Agenda • Overview of Pivot Funding • Pivot funding search options: • Quick Search • Advanced Search • Saving, and Tracking searches and individual opportunities

  3. What is Pivot? • Global database • Provides access as a source of funding opportunities for research grants, post-doctoral research, fellowships • Can also be a resource for undergraduate and graduate student research

  4. Where do I find Pivot??? • From UW-Stout homepage • Click on Research • Scroll down to Funding Opportunities • Click on databases tab • Find Pivot; click on link http://pivot.cos.com/ • Off Campus access- will need to register for Pivot • On campus access- do not need to register, but still recommended

I’m on Pivot… now what? • Highly recommended signing up for Pivot account • Will allow you to get email alerts and track funding opportunities • From home page, click on “Sign up” link in upper right hand corner • Will ask for name, email address, and password • Default member institution is UW-Stout

Quick Search • Can search by text to give broad results • Can use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) within search box for multiple word searches • Examples • Baseball football- Records containing the exact phrase “Baseball football” • Baseball AND Football- Records containing both words • Baseball OR Football- Records containing either words • Baseball NOT Football- Records containing baseball without the word football

Applied Quick Search by Text • Lesbian gay bisexual transgender- Records containing the exact phrase “Lesbian gay bisexual transgender” • Lesbian AND Gay AND Bisexual AND Transgender- Records containing all of the words • Lesbian OR Gay OR Bisexual OR Transgender- Records containing each individual word • Transgender NOT Lesbian NOT Gay NOT Bisexual- Records containing transgender without the other words

  12. Quick Search • Can search by sponsor or funding source • Used when you have a particular source in mind • Can type in full name of sponsor or acronym • National Science Foundation or NSF • Can search by • All sponsors • US Federal Sponsors • Non US Federal Sponsors

Applied Quick Search by Sponsor or Funding Source • Lesbian gay bisexual transgender common sponsor or funding sources • Williams Institute • American Psychological Association • National Institute of Mental Health • National Institute of Health • United States Department of Health and Human Services

  15. Advanced Search • Allows you to search by specific fields to provide a narrower list of search results • Two ways to do this: • Can narrow down results from Quick Search by clicking “Refine Search” • Can start with Advanced Search

  18. Saving your Search • Helps you keep track of your search history • Also gives you option to set up email alerts for new opportunities within your search • After saving your search, you can share search with others by providing their email addresses

  20. Tracked & Active Opportunities • Active opportunities- ones that are more important to you • Tracked opportunities- ones that you want to monitor

Tracked & Active Opportunities • Two ways • From search results list • Check box next to program of interest • Select either “Track” or “Active” from top • From within an opportunity • Select opportunity of interest • Select either “Tracking” or “Active” • Can also receive email alerts when opportunity is updated • Only available when you have created a Pivot profile
