  1. Welcome Parents Miss Velicsanyi McGrath Elementary School Second Grade 2006/2007

  2. About Miss Velicsanyi… I earned my B.A. and California State Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University Northridge. I recently returned to CSUN to obtain a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. Concurrently, I was a School Age Caregiver for 5 years at North Park Child Care. This position has allowed me gain experience in developing classroom management skills, lesson planning, and establishing relationships with parents, children, and staff. When I am not at McGrath, some of my favorite things to do are spending time with my family and pets, going to the movies, planning trips, and scrap booking.

  3. Positive Approaches • Encourage students to strive for academic achievement. • Teach students “HOW” to learn in general. • Positive feedback on quizzes, homework and tests. • Various teaching strategies. • Secure and comfortable environment with in the classroom. • Focusing on the strengths and using that as an advantage on other subjects.

  4. Second Grade Objectives Students will learn to become: • Self-directed learners • Responsible • Life-long learners

  5. How do we reach these goals? • Teamwork • Communication • Parent and student involvement

  6. Core Values • Responsibility • Respect • Honesty • Accountability

  7. Behavior  To maintain a safe environment it is important that students follow school and classroom rules. In order to make sure rules are followed, students will bring home a weekly report that will consist of their behavior and work habits. Behavior • Wow = super-spectacular day at school-special recognition • Nice job = following classroom rules-earn 5 activity time minutes • Warning = a second reminder to follow rule • Think time = lose 5 minutes of recess • Stop Sign = detention

  8. Classroom Management Good behavior will be rewarded using a variety of methods: Individual incentives:  • School supplies • Homework passes • Caught being good ticket • Treasure box

  9. Classroom Management Whole Class incentives:  • Extra recess • Parties • Extra activity time

  10. Homework • Homework will be distributed on Monday and it will be due on the following Friday. • It will include 20 minutes of reading. The remaining time will be spent on spelling activities, and math assignments. • The estimated time of how long homework should take the students in second grade is about 30 to 40 minutes.

  11. Communication There are many ways we will communicate throughout the year: • Email- Mvsalazar1@aol.com • Second grade website www.csun.edu/~mav18314 • Hand-written notes • Telephone conversations • Parent/teacher conferences

  12. We look forward to working with your children and doing our best to help them have a successful year in second grade. Thank You Back to first Slide
