  1. Functions Common Core #11 Part 3 Thinker! Real-World Functions Is the time needed to cook a turkey (y-axis) a function of the weight of the turkey (x-axis)? A function requires the input(x-value) MUST have only one output(y-value).

  2. It would be a function • It takes 20 minutes to bake a one-pound turkey, 40 minutes for a two-pound turkey, etc. so no y-value (cooking time) will ever have the same x-value (weight) unless you screw up baking your turkey.

  3. Common Core #11 • Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.

  4. Definitions The set of the first coordinates is called the domain(x-value) of the relation. The set of the second coordinates is called the range(y-value) of the relation. Any set of ordered pairs is called a relation. A Function is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range.

  5. Functions Given this table of values , what is the domain? Domain: {-4, -2, 0} Domain is ALWAYS the first set of numbers or the X-values

  6. Functions Given this table of values , what is the range? Range: {5, 6, 2} Range is ALWAYS the second set of numbers or the Y-values

  7. The Domain and Range • Look on page 68 at #15. • Find the domain and range given the table. • Domain {1, 4, 8, 14} • Range {27, 39, 50, 62} • Now write a sentence explaining the difference between the domain and range.

  8. Functions • Now we need to figure out given a set of ordered pairs or a table of x- and y- values, is the relation a function.

  9. Relations and Functions Copy this table down. Is this relation a function? Can we tell based on this? This is a function because each domain/x-value/input HAS EXACTLY ONE range/y-value/output.

  10. Is the relation a function? Relation is (0,1), (1,2), (1,3), (2,4) Make a table with domain and range and determine if this relation is a function.

  11. IT IS NOT A FUNCTION Because the y-coordinates of 2 and 3 have the same different x-coordinate of 1.

  12. Is the relation a function? This is a function because it is OK for the y-values to be the same JUST not the x-values.

  13. Notebook Examples • Are these relations functions? Yes or No and explain your answer. • #1 (-5, 2),(-1, 4), (2, -5), (4, -1) • #2 (-1, 3),(-1, 2), (0, -4), (2, 4) • #3 • Answers • Yes • No • Yes

  14. Real-World Functions • I want you to try and come up with a real-world situation that would represent a function(like the baking a turkey example) using input and output values. Also try to come up with a real-world situation that is NOT a function. You will have to think mucho hard!!!!!!!!!
