  2. The Prompt • Consider the six lenses presented in our presentations on Michael Patrick McDonald’s All Souls and James McBride’s The Color of Water.. Although these topics or lenses may be considered separately, they clearly intertwine and often directly influence each other. • Choose TWO lenses, and write an organized, detailed four-paragraph essay in which you explore how they are connected. Remember to create a clear introduction and thesis which identify your choices. Also, support your claims with textual supports from both works, properly formatted and explained.

  3. Where to begin 1. Identify your chosen lenses and how they connect/influence each other. 2. Introduction needs: Hook, memoir titles and authors, thesis statement. Developing the thesis: • Thesis: Step 1-(example) social/cultural tradition and family are connect/directly influence one another. • Thesis: Step 2 – connect to memoirs • Thesis: Step 3 – By looking at __(how)______(identity lenses) influence one another in (titles/authors of memoirs), we can see ___________(what? make a claim about your authors/memoirs), and this is important because (why?).

  4. Body Paragraph 1 • Write about one memoir at a time. • How are these lenses connected/influencing one another for MacDonald’s All Souls? • How do they work together/influence one another to shape his story, his identity? • Discuss and provide 2-3 quotes for evidence. • Be sure to introduce quotes and provide citations. • Analyze quotes • Include any other relevant examples that might further prove your thesis. • So What? Why is this important to understanding Mac Donald’s identity?

  5. Body Paragraph 2 • Write about one memoir at a time. • How are these lenses connected/influencing one another for McBride’s Color of Water? • How do they work together/influence one another to shape his story, his identity? • Discuss and provide 2-3 quotes for evidence. • Be sure to introduce quotes and provide citations. • Analyze quotes • Include any other relevant examples that might further prove your thesis. • So What? Why is this important to understanding McBride’s identity?

  6. Conclusion • So What? • Do not restate what you’ve already written. • What have you learned about identity and influences? • Do not use “I” • Introduce your quotes • Proof Read • Make sure your ideas make sense!
