  6. Areas of study for each Region • Physical Processes (soil, climate, relief, drainage) • Economic Processes (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary activities) • Human Processes (language, religion, urban & rural development, population dynamics)

COMPLEXITY OF REGIONS • The complexity of interaction between political, cultural and economic activities. • The European Union as a region • Changes within regions over time (2.3) --------------------------------------------------------- (2.4) • Urban growth and changes • Change in political boundaries • Language and cultural changes

SETTINGSSYLLABUS, Page 15 (Statement 2.2) • FIVE REGIONS TO BE SELECTED: • Two contrasting Irish regions • Two contrasting European regions • One continental / subcontinental region • Use regions as a setting, where possible for study of core unit 1, elective 4 or 5 or option (higher level only)

  9. TEACHING APPROACHES • LINEAR APPROACH Teach CU 1 and continue through CU2 to the Optional Unit • INTEGRATED APPROACH Choose Regions Linkages between Core Units, the Electives and the Optional Unit. • Other Approaches?

  10. SKILLS Skills need to be integrated into all areas of the syllabus, where appropriate: • Map interpretation • Photographic analysis • Figure interpretation • Statistical Analysis • Information Technology

OUTCOMES HIGHER LEVEL • Explain and illustrate, at different scales, concept of a region. • Show a detailed understanding of how physical, economic and human processes interact. • Assess the complexity of this interaction, and the potential for change in the boundaries and extent of the regions. • Use skills to interpret how economic, human and physical processes interact.

  12. OUTCOMES ORDINARY LEVEL • Explain the idea of a region. • Show how physical, economic and human processes interact in regions. • Illustrate the complexity of regions and how boundaries change over time. • Use skills in the study of regions

  13. TEACHING APPROACHES • LINEAR APPROACH Teach Unit 1, Unit 2 and continue through to the Optional Unit • INTEGRATED APPROACH Choose Settings Exploit linkages between the Core Units, the Electives and the Optional Unit.
