Principles of Instruction • Erikson was interested in psychosocial development of children • Studied children from different cultures and developed his theory • Society and culture play important roles in cognitive development • Learning takes place through psychosocial stages • Children develop in societies expectation, prohibitions, and prejudices “Children love and want to be loved and they very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph of hateful failure. Do not mistake a child for his symptom” Erik Erikson

Components of Instruction • Early childhood education approaches are developed by Erikson’s theory. • Erikson’s analysis of children’s behavior and social interactions provides tools for designing instruction. • Understanding Erikson’s theory explains diversity of learners. • Applying psychosocial development in the classroom provides a positive learning environment.

Designing Instruction for Complex Skills • Determine skills to be taught • Clearly specify behavior or skill to be learned • Teach the steps in the procedure • Provide positive guidance and feedback • This is key for the learners virtue, according to the 8 stages, to have proper development and not end in a crisis.
