The Aarhus Declaration 2012: Towards European Research Area of Excellence • It is essential that Europe strengthens its science base, with excellence as the guiding principle. • EUROPE must build on and support national excellence initiatives to educate and nurture talent in order to produce and attract top researchers

  3. Teaming for excellence and innovation Teaming of excellent research institutions and low perfoming RDI regions Objective: The creation of new centres of excellence in low performing RDI Member State and regions or significant upgrade of existing ones

  4. Creation of Stairways to excellence It means: Investment must be targeted. Excellence tends to emerge particular areas or fields, involving highly-concentrated effort. There is a critical mass effect.

In 2012 Kaunas University of Technology and European Commission have signed the subsidiary agreement in The Seventh Framework Programme for the project Centre of Excellence in Organic Semiconductor Research (CEOSeR). The subsidy granted for KTU is 2,8 Million EUR. In 2012 KUT Prof Kazimieras Baršauskas Untrasound Research Institute participated in 7 projects for development of small and medium enterprises in the 7FP. The project funding for the Institute reached 0,6 Million EUR. Develpoment in Science and Innovation Areas • In 2010 KUT has begun implementing one its most significant projects - the integrated science, studies and business centre the Santaka and Nemunas Valley. • In 2010 the first state-of-the-art Lithuanian Food Science and Technology Competence Centre was established. • In cooperation with Aalto University (Finland), KUT has established Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, acting as an animator of the Valley R&D.
