  2. Epicycles Introduced to explain retrograde (westward) motion of planets The Ptolemaic system was considered the “standard model” of the Universe until the Copernican Revolution.

  3. Ptolemy explained this motion using a geocentric (Earth-centered) model of the solar system in which the planets orbited the Earth indirectly, by moving on epicycles which in turn orbited the Earth.
