  4. Labor Issues • No overseer (Lord) to protect workers • Low wages and long hours • Child labor (as young as five years old) • Only wealthy were educated

Romantic Ideals • Focus on ordinary people and things • Nature as source of healing • Non-conformity; striving to be better • Rebellions against unjust governments and institutions • Interest in the power of imagination • Fascination with supernatural • Often followed unconventional spirituality

  6. Romantic Ideals • Fascination with strangers from “strange lands” • Concerned with injustice in the world around them • Concerned with the efforts of business on the environment and the human condition • Interest in taking drugs and achieving “higher consciousness”
