Focus of Dr. O’Connor’s Research

Dr. O'Connor's research focuses on the development of new organic chemistry labs using technology to monitor the reaction, specifically hydrogenation of Methyl Trans-Cinnamate. The research aims to achieve good reaction conditions, less than 1 hour reaction time, and 1.0 atm pressure. The principles of green chemistry, such as using environmentally friendly chemicals, catalysis, solventless processes, and minimizing waste, are incorporated into the development of these labs.

  1. Focus of Dr. O’Connor’s Research Development of Green Chemistry Labs Development of new organic chemistry hydrogenation labs Development of ORGANIC Chemistry labs using technology TO MONITOR THE REACTION

  2. Hydrogenation of Methyl Trans-Cinnamate • Good reaction conditions • Less than 1 hour reaction time. • 1.0 atm. Methyl-3-phenylpropionate Methyl Trans-Cinnamate

  3. Some Principles of Green Chemistry Choose to use environmentally friendly chemicals. Use catalysts when possible. Prevent waste by using a solventless process. Minimize amounts of solvents and reagents used.

  4. General Reaction for the THP Protection of Alcohols. This can be done with and without solvent. The goal is to run the reaction solventless. THP is a protecting group in organic chemistry.

  5. These are Examples of Solventless Tetrahydropyranylation Reactions Benzyl alcohol Tetrahydropyran The identification of other solventless reactions is presently under investigation.
