The EELA project aims to bridge established e-Infrastructures in Europe with emerging initiatives in Latin America, fostering collaboration and scientific innovation. It integrates diverse scientific applications (HEP, Biomed, Climate, etc.) and promotes the training in grid technologies through events and workshops. Funded by the European Commission, EELA has established a network of resource centers across Latin America and Europe, supporting researchers in their pursuit of knowledge and data sharing. The project is transforming e-Science in Latin America, creating lasting sustainability for e-Infrastructures.

EU-LAC Summit EELA 1st Conference Research approach, Methodology EELA is one of the most important customers of RedCLARA!
EELA in one slide • Researchers willing to perform their activities regardless of their geographical location, interact with colleagues, share and access data. • The Pilot Test-bed: Resource Centres in EU and LA are "glued" by the EGEE middleware. • Applications and scientific data (HEP, Biomed, e-Learning, Climate, etc.)
Approach • Build a bridge between consolidated e-Infrastructure initiatives in Europe and emerging ones in Latin American • Create a collaboration network to deploy a large portfolio of scientific applications on a well supported Pilot Test-bed • Care in parallel of the training in grid technologies and of the knowledge dissemination and outreach • Co-funded by European Commission: • 1.7 M€ • 0.4 M€ (CIEMAT) • 0.5 M€ (partners counterpart)

The First EELA GRID School (EGRIS-1) • 2 weeks devoted to learn how to “gridify” applications • 8 applications selected and 7 gridified (e-Learning, climate, biomed and optimization) • 66 nodes, 4 sites + 10 Mbits/s connection installed in an island
Tutorial statistics: number of attendees • 9 Tutorials + ROC-on-Duty + Grid School (EGRIS-1) • 500 participants enrolled • Side effect: formation of Local Training Teams in many LA countries
Brazil Chile Peru Mexico EU Colombia Ecuador Nicaragua Venezuela El Salvador Survey of Communities: 2006 results • 46 LA communities • 5 European communities from France, Luxembourg, Spain, UK MoUs with new institutions have already been signed http://www.eu-eela.org/eela_new_communities_form.php
Applications • 13 running applications (9 developed by EELA) • Applications to address particular LA issues Malaria studies El Niño Phenomenon E-learning
Summary and Conclusions • EELA is completely changing the perspective about e-Science in Latin America; • This not only because of the number of grid sites, or CPUs, or Terabytes, but rather because: • we are "building" the human network creating/fostering scientific collaborations across the Atlantic; • we are raising the awareness of new ways of doing (e-)Science; • we are putting the seed for a long term sustainability of e-Infrastructures in the Region.
