Annotating the magazine front covers • Use two different coloured highlighters to show where you are identifying a feature and a different colour to show you are analysing that feature by saying what it connotes • e.g. the main image is of a young girl with smooth skin, a smiling face and perfect hair. • She is the idealised version of the reader. Something they aspire to become and with the help of the magazine they hope to achieve

  4. Use terminology to identify features • Masthead • Sell lines • Main image • Slogan • Anchorage text • Strapline • Colour scheme • Direct address • Layout

  5. Magazine audiences • According to Blumler and Katz what uses and gratifications might be met for the target audience ?

  6. Audience Positioning • Write about audience positioning Media texts such as magazines speak to their audience in a way which puts them in a position as if they agree with certain values and ideology

What positions are audiences forced to adopt by the sell lines on magazine covers? • Jonas Mania! • Vanessa: ‘what’s next for Zac and Me’ • JLS REVEAL ALL ‘Britney wants Marvin!’ The following positions perhaps … • An interest in celebrity lifestyle: • Aspirations for a celebrity lifestyle • Celebrity lifestyle is exciting • There are elements of secrecy which the magazine can access for you.

Examples of sell lines: • Fashion Icon FEARNE like you’ve never seen her before • Style your shape • Why boys bug out and how to fix it fast • Inside his head • Real life bullies: smeared with poo, dumped on Facebook, teased for being a lesbian How do these sell lines position the audience? • It’s acceptable to be a fashion icon (Value) Consumerist values are good • You should aim to have style (Value) • Boys are a mystery but the magazine can help you to understand them. They are sensitive but don’t show it in the same way as girls. (Value and ideology) • Bullies are a set of people who behave wrongly: It’s OK to gain pleasure from reading about their awful behaviour. (Values and ideology)

Remember the socio economic scale when identifying the target audience of the magazines and of your own magazine A: Higher managerial and professional B: Intermediate managerial and professional C1: Supervisory, clerical, junior managerial C2: Skilled manual workers D: Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers E: State pensioners, casual workers

The ideological values of the magazine • Buying stuff can make your life better (consumerist ideology) • Having style and being fashionable makes your life better (Consumerist ideology) • Being attracted to boys is normal but you have to handle them in a particular way to keep them. • Being masculine means being like a warrior, handling weapons skillfully; being a protector

  12. How does your magazine meet the audience’s needs? • Make sure you have commented upon your own magazine and how it might meet the needs of the target audience.

  15. Content analysis: how many men / women? • Textual analysis • What are they wearing? What does this connote? How much naked flesh do they show? • What characters are male and female? • What actions are they involved in? • What relationships?

However even though they use computers they might not be attracted to the website.   19. Your own production storyboard and website must be all your own work. • Share out the existing photos you have used. Each person must devise their own storyboard using the selected images. You may take more if required or you could use images you have taken outside of school. • OR you could draw your storyboard instead of using photos. • Get a print out of other websites such as Waterloo Road and annotate the features you will incorporate into your own work
