Liturgy • WeencounterJesus in bothscripture and Eucharist • Parts of Mass: Liturgy of Word/Liturgy of Eucharist • Liturgy of the word—God speaks to us, covenant renewed • The two are so interconnected they form one act of worship • Both based on scripture • OT/Ps—dialogue our life with God/NT/ Gospel • Homily is a reflection on scripture • Eucharistic prayer based on Pascal Mystery • Sacraments are also based on scripture • Reminder: difference between Bible and lectionary

  4. Song • Psalms are to be sung • Gregorian chant • Music used in Church is written from scripture (primarily)

Liturgy of the Hours • Official public prayer of the Church • For Priests and religious as well as laity • Also known as Divine Office • http://divineoffice.org/ or http://www.ebreviary.com/ • Primary hours prayed are morning and evening • 7 official times a day-sanctifies time • Breviary—book used to pray office • Scriptures-canticles-antiphons-mediations • Benedictine term-work of God –Opus Dei

Liturgy of the hours • Morning (Dawn) Lauds • Themes: Resurrection-Praise of creation-dedication-Light-Dawn • Mid-morning (9) Terce • Mid-day (noon) Sext • Mid-afternoon (3) None • Evening (6) Verpers • Themes: Gratitude for Christ-reflection of Passion and death- Thanksgiving for the day-repentance for sin • Night Compline • Office of readings Matins

  7. Lord’s Prayer • Prayer-communication /conversation with God • Jesus models prayer • Luke 11:1+ • Summary of Gospels • Most perfect of all prayers • Shared by all Christians • Used at Mass, Liturgy of the Hours and Sacraments

  8. 7 petitions-Our Father • Petition is a request for grace or blessing/models of Christian prayer • 1.Hallowed be thy Nameasking for our words radiate respect and reverence for God • 2. Thy Kingdom Come asking for fulfillment of reign of God/ strength to be a sign of God on earth • 3. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven we ask for obedient and trusting heart so our desire do not get in the way of God’s will • 4. Give us this Day our Daily Bread prayer for a greater awareness of our need for God, prayer ourself as well as others

  9. 7 petitions-Our Father (con’t) • 5. Forgive us our Trespasses-as we Forgive those who trespass against us focuses on God’s forgiveness and our willingness to forgive • 6. Lead us Not into Temptationprayer for a wise and vigilant heart to identify and resist temptation • 7. Deliver us From Evil prayer for protection from evil

Rules of Saints • Augustine-Community (Acts 4:32) • Live harmoniously; with compassion and love • All things are shared in common; only possession is love • Benedict-Hospitality (Mt 25:35 when I was hungry…) • Treat all guests as Christ • Francis-Simplicity (Mt 10: 9-10 leave everything and give to poor) • live after poor and crucified Christ • Simple life; rid of material wealth • Removes distractions from life thus learning wealth in God’s mercy
