  3. High School Graduation Requirements A minimum of 230 credits in the following subject areas • Pass the High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

  4. High School vs. Four-year College HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION • Social Science: 30 credits, World History, US History, Civics/Economics • English: 40 credits • Mathematics: 20 credits, Including Algebra 1-2 • Science: 20 credits, One year life science + one year physical science • Fine Art or Foreign Lang: 5 credits • Fine Art: 5 credits • Practical Art, PE, Health, Computer Literacy UC/CSU A-G REQUIREMENTS A Social Science 2 years, World History & US History B English 4 years C Mathematics 3 years (recommend 4+) including Algebra 1-2, Geometry 1-2, Algebra 3-4 D Lab Science 2 years (recommend 3+) one year life science & one year physical science E Foreign Language 2 years same language (recommend 3+) F Visual & Performing Art 1 year (two trimesters) of same class G College-Prep Elective 1 year Passing grade is D or better Grades must be C’s or better

  5. Sample 9th Grade Schedule at “Traditional” High School 5 credits per passing class semester X 12 class semesters = 60 possible credits

Trimester vs. Traditional Semester • Trimester allows flexibility • 4 or 5 classes/trimester • 4 classes + off-roll period (all 4 years) • Equals same course load as “traditional semester” • Can still fit in all HS graduation & college requirements • 5 classes/trimester • Extra/heavier academic load • Opportunity to explore or fit in-depth area of interest • Great for athletes to take off roll • Band, ASB, Yearbook, etc. fit well as 5th class Counseling

  7. Off Roll What is it? • “Off Roll” is a time in the student’s day when they are not enrolled in a class. • Students who are passing their courses can choose up to one off roll period per trimester. • 1st Period Off Roll = Any 9th Grade Student • 5th Period Off Roll = 9th Grade Students who earn a 3.0 GPA or above in their previous grading period

Strategies for School Success • Come to school everyday and on time • Use a planner in class & at home. • Do all assignments & study for tests • Tutorial: Mon/Wed/Thurs 3:02 – 3:32 p.m. • Ask teachers for extra help • Work on group project or form a study group • Check My Plan at least weekly • Communicate with teachers • Get involved – join clubs, sports, attend events • Challenge yourself but don’t take too heavy of a load and be careful not to over-commit • Take care of yourself; eat right & get enough sleep • See your school counselor
