  2. Surrealism-a 20th-century avant-garde* movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. • *Avant-garde:(from French, "advance guard" or "vanguard", literally "fore-guard") are works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. Background • Sigmund Freud- neurologist who had a big interest in the work of the Surrealists. • Freud's work with free association, dream analysis, and the unconscious was of utmost importance to the Surrealists in developing methods to liberate imagination. 4. Vocabulary • NON-SEQUITUR-(Latin for "it does not follow"), in formal logic, is an argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises. In a non sequitur, the conclusion could be either true or false, but the argument is fallacious because there is a disconnection between the premise and the conclusion. • JUXTAPOSITION-the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect."the juxtaposition of these two images"
