  1. Nemean Lion

  2. Myth • The Nemean Lion metope is from the story of the twelve labours. These were twelve tasks which Hercules was set to do by Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns and Mycenae. • He was forced to do this because Hera sent him into a temporary insanity, which caused him to kill his wife and children. He prayed to Apollo for guidance, and got told to serve Eurystheus for twelve years. • As part of the sentence, he had to do twelve labours, which were tasks which were nearly impossible.

  3. Athena • Hercules taking a break after killing… • The Nemean Lion

  4. I doubt that his reconstruction is accurate, due to the weird colours, but gives an idea of the entire piece. • Hermes is present, along with Athena, for in the myth they were sympathetic towards Hercules and helped him when he needed it.

  5. More interesting than older style Metopes. • Excellent detail on the hair of Athena. • Most is missing, but you can still see how some parts are completely cut from the back stone.

  6. Woodford says… • A lot about the myth behind it, but nothing in particular about the Nemean Lion metope… Pg99-102
