  2. Define e-learning and m-learning. E-LEARNING (ELECTRONIC LEARNING) • Electronic learning (or e-Learning or eLearning) is a type of education where the medium of instruction is computer technology. • No in-person interaction may take place in some instances. • E-learning is used interchangeably in a wide variety of contexts. • In companies, it refers to the strategies that use the company network to deliver training courses to employees

  3. M-LEARNING (MOBILE LEARNING) • One definition of mobile learning is: Learning that happens across locations, or that takes advantage of learning opportunities offered by portable technologies. In other words, mobile learning decreases limitation of learning location with the mobility of general portable devices. • The term covers: learning with portable technologies, where the focus is on the technology (which could be in a fixed location, such as a classroom); • learning across contexts, where the focus is on the mobility of the learner, interacting with portable or fixed technology; and • learning in a mobile society, with a focus on how society and its institutions can accommodate and support the learning of an increasingly mobile population that is not satisfied with existing learning methodologies.

  4. 2.  Why e-learning is important in teaching and learning now. • Learning is self-paced and gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as necessary • Learning is self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools appropriate to their differing interests, needs, and skill levels • Accommodates multiple learning styles using a variety of delivery methods geared to different learners; more effective for certain learners • Designed around the learner • Geographical barriers are eliminated, opening up broader education options • 24/7 accessibility makes scheduling easy and allows a greater number of people to attend classes

  5. On-demand access means learning can happen precisely when needed • Travel time and associated costs (parking, fuel, vehicle maintenance) are reduced or eliminated • Overall student costs are frequently less (tuition, residence, food, child care) • Potentially lower costs for companies needing training, and for the providers • Fosters greater student interaction and collaboration • Fosters greater student/instructor contact • Enhances computer and Internet skills • Draws upon hundreds of years of established pedagogical principles • Has the attention of every major university in the world, most with their own online degrees, certificates, and individual courses

  6. 3.What are new technologies for m-learning. • Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), in the classroom and outdoors • Tablet PC UMPC mobile phone, camera phone and SmartPhone • Learning Mobile Author, e.g. for authoring and publishing WAP, J2ME and Smartphone • Personal audio player, e.g. for listening to audio recordings of lectures • Handheld audio and multimedia guides, in museums and galleries

  7. Personal audio player, e.g. for listening to audio recordings of lectures • Handheld audio and multimedia guides, in museums and galleries • Handheld game console, modern gaming consoles such as Sony PSP or Nintendo DS/Wii • Technical and delivery support for mobile learning: • 3GP- For compression and delivery method of audiovisual content associated with Mobile Learning • Wi-Fi gives access to instructors and resources via internet • GPRS mobile data service, provides high speed connection and data transfer rate

  8. 4.  Do you think e-learning is important to you as a student. If so, why? • E-learning is important to me as a student because of these following factors ; • It creates Awareness - evaluate expectations, assess time needed to complete work, understand motivations/value of the learning, assess personal skills -technical and study skills • Student will be Orientated - online, a student goes through several stages before engaging the content - the computer, internet, the virtual classroom, software, instructor and students, and finally the content. Different students will enter a course at different levels of preparedness...but in online courses, and instructor should be able to accommodate a student at any level.

  9. Student will be more Disciplined - follow course schedule and complete assignments • Student will be be more Organized - schedule study time and online time to ensure all course obligations are met • Student will be more Self-directed - able to motivate her/himself...ask for help when needed, etc. • Student will be Internally or externally motivated (ie, some requirement or just because it's something that really interests them).

  10.   5.  What is the future of e-learning in education? • Memorizing facts will have a much lower value, while utilizing information for analysis and decisions will be a critical skill. • The world is shrinking rapidly.  The Internet has brought the world together in ways that nobody would have expected.  You can now attend a college half way around the world, with students from any country with Internet access.

  11.    Other changes that the education will go through from the impact of e-learning are ; • Many schools and colleges will be taken over or will go out of business • A much greater % of learning (formal and informal) will take place online. • The massive role of instructor will be broken down into multiple positions: curriculum design, content delivery, classroom facilitator, learner support, etc. • Many schools and colleges will be taken over or will go out of business • A much greater % of learning (formal and informal) will take place online. • The massive role of instructor will be broken down into multiple positions: curriculum design, content delivery, classroom facilitator, learner support, etc.
