  1. 3rd Quarter Journals Answer all journals in a ½ page in complete sentences, reaching the middle hole of your notebook.

  2. Journal 1 “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Henry David Thoreau What do you think Thoreau means by the phrase “to live deliberately”? Do you think that you live deliberately? Why or why not?

  3. Journal 2 Transcendentalists believed that no institution should be as powerful as the individual. How much power do political, religious, and corporate institutions wield in our society? Support your position with examples. Can one person make a difference in our society? If so, how? Should individuals have more power than they do? Why or why not?

  4. Journal 3 If you had to pick the worst television series ever made, what would win? Why?

  5. Journal 4 If you could achieve absolute success in only one area of your life, what would you want it to be? Explain your answer. You need a literature book!

  6. Emerson Quote Project With a partner or on your own, choose 1-3 quotes from Emerson’s Nature (p.390) and Self-Reliance (p. 393)and create a collage that represents the quotes using magazine clippings (at least 4 images). Ex: “To be great is to be misunderstood.” Pictures of women who are “misunderstood” Only showing women cleaning, working in the garden cooking….other side women in suits You must accompany your collage with a 1-2 paragraph explanation of why you chose the images you did and and how they represent the quote(s) you chose.

  7. Journal 5 If you had to choose the most important single event of this century, what would win the honor? Why?

  8. Journal 6 If you could have the answer to any question, what would you ask? Why? Who do you think would know the answer?

  9. Journal 7 Describe the perfect day. What would you eat, see, do, etc? This needs to be a day that is possible for you to have.

  12. Journal 10 Imagine that you can see five years into the future. What is your life like, personally and professionally? Where are you living? Who are you with? What have you accomplished?

  13. Journal 11 What “mask” do you wear on a daily basis? What feelings and emotions do you hide from most people and why? How do you feel when you must appear or behave as others expect (if you do this?)

  14. Journal 12 If you could make a film from any book, what book would you pick? Why?

  20. Journal 16 Describe a character you have recently met in your reading. Why is this character memorable? What are his or her outstanding traits? What problems has the character overcome?

  23. Journal 19 If you could be on the cover of any magazine in your lifetime, which magazine would you want it to be, and what would the caption say?

  24. Journal 20 Describe the relationship between Huck and Jim. How has it changed since Chapter 1? Does it surprise you? Give specific examples from the novel.

  25. Journal 21 How have Huck’s lies and stories been necessary for his survival on the river and in towns? Give at least one specific example. When does the “truth [prove to be] better and actuly safer than a lie?” (hint: Mary Jane Wilks).
