  1. Section 1-3Studying Life Biology Flora

  2. Biology • Biology – the study of life • Branches of biology include: • Zoology – study of animals • Botany – study of plants • Microbiology – study of microorganisms • Cell Biology – study of cells • Ecology – study of ecosystems

  3. Characteristics of Living Things(8) • Living things are composed of cells • Cells – basic unit of life • Living things reproduce • Cells can produce through asexual or sexual reproduction • Sexual reproduction – cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism • Asexual reproduction – process by which an organism reproduces by itself

  4. Characteristics of Living Things Cont. • Living things contain DNA and use the same genetic code • Living things grow and develop • Cells divide through a process called mitosis which makes more cells • Living things must obtain energy and molecules • Metabolism – chemical reactions in which organisms build up or break down materials as it carries out life processes.

  5. Characteristics of Living Things Cont. • Living things respond to their environment • Stimulus – a signal to which an organism responds • Living things maintain a stable environment • Homeostasis – maintaining a stable environment • Living things change over time • Age • Evolve

  6. Metric System • Basic Units: • Mass – gram • Volume – liter • Length – meter • Temperature – centigrade

  7. Other Topics • Dimensional analysis/conversion facts • Using metric system • Microscopy • Parts of microscope • Using a compound light microscope • Calculating magnification
