  1. Japan’s Pacific Campaign What causes the US to enter WWII? December 7th, 1941 “A Date Which Will Live In Infamy”

Japan attacks US • Japan creating Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere – US worried Japan might want their Pacific possessions • 1940-1941: US sends aid to KMT in China, stops supplies to Japan • 12/7/1941: Japanese warplanes bomb US Naval ships at Pearl Harbor, Hawai‘i – Admiral Yamamoto leads surprise attack • President Roosevelt asks for a declaration of war on Japan, calling the event “A date which will live in infamy” The Pacific War • Jan 1942: Japan attacks US in Guam, Wake Island, Philippines • Feb 1942: Japan attacks British in Malaya, Hong Kong, Burma US joins the Allied Powers • War Crime: Japan puts Allied POWs on the Bataan Death March (16K killed) • US interns 110K Japanese-Americans

  4. Allies Strike Back • April 1942: Allies under Col. Doolittle bomb Tokyo, little damage is done, but shows Japan is vulnerable to air attacks • Battle of the Coral Sea – May 1942: Japan plans to invade Australia, both sides use aircraft carriers. Allies stop Japan • Battle of Midway – June 1942: Allied code breakers learn Adm. Yamamoto is planning an attack on Midway • Led by Admiral Nimitz, US launches a surprise attack that destroys 4 of Yamamoto’s aircraft carriers (turning point in war) Discuss: Why do you think Midway was a turning point in the Pacific War?

Douglas MacArthur who uses a strategy called “island hopping”. • Go from island to island take less defended islands first – moving closer to Japan • Battle of Guadalcanal - Aug 1942: Must stop Japan from building airbase, Allies win 6 month battle killing 31K of the 36K Japanese troops • Philippines: MacArthur returns and liberates the islands Gen.Douglas MacArthur
