  2. Youth • born 18th July 1918 near Qunu (Mvezo) • Rolihlahla = “troublemaker“ • the youngest child • got a proper education • at school renamed ’Nelson‘ • interested in African history • attended University of Fort Hare

  3. Youth • studies for law • contact to Walter Sisulu • 1950 voted in the National Commission of the ANC • foundation of a lawyer’s office • banned from political meetings

ANC • was founded in 1912 • to increase rights of blacks • 1944 Mandela joins the ANC • founded the ANC Youth League • youth wing of the African National Congress • mass strikes (non violent) • 1963 co-founded the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) • to end apartheid by sabotage or guerrilla war

Prison • the giant process 1956 till 1961 • 1960 Sharpeville • fight by force • ANC had been forbidden • 1962 Mandela was arrested to five years prison • 1964 Mandela was convinced to life imprisonment • Robben Island • 1985 Mandela rejected the offer of a release • February 1990 Mandela's release • 1993 Mandela and de Klerk received the Nobel peace prize

  6. After Prison • 1994 Mandela became the first black president • main project: to build a new international image of South Africa • December 1997 Mandela gave up the presidency of the ANC • successor Mr Mbeki • Summer 1999 Mandela stepped down as president • successor Mr Mbeki
