  2. Nelson Mandela facts • Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 and lived in South Africa. • He was as poor black child. • He was a passionate child. • Nelson Mandela’s name was actually called Rolihlahla Mandela but his teacher gave him the name Nelson.

  3. Young Nelson Mandela • Nelson Mandela went to a poor black children school. • Very few black children get to go to school. • Black people were treated very badly there. • When Nelson Mandela was 9 his dad the leader of the Thembu tribe died.Nelson was very sad.

  4. University • Black people were not treated very well in University, Nelson Mandela hated this. • They were not aloud use certain things like the toilets, the hall or the playground. • One day Nelson Mandela stood up to the teacher and got thrown out.

  5. The Government • The English took over the Government in South Africa. • They were treated very badly. • They were not aloud use public benches, parks or libraries and more.

  6. Peaceful Protests • Nelson Mandela started leading peaceful protests against the government. • If the government came outside they would shoot them all. • Oliver Tambo was Mandela’s partner.

  7. Violent Protests • When peaceful protests didd’nt work, Nelson Mandela started a group called the Spear of the Nation. • It was a group doing violent protests against the government. • But one day Nelson Mandela got caught and was thrown into prison for plotting to overthrow the Government.

  8. Prison • After he was arrested he went to Robben Island prison. • His cell number was 46664. • He spent most of his life in prison outside in the gardens. • He was in prison for 27 years.

  9. Protests • After a while people began going on strike to free Nelson Mandela. • Soon everyone was on strike. • Then Dunnes stores went on strike and did not buy any South African produce.

  10. Free at last • After 27 years De Clerk set Nelson Mandela free. • Everyone was so relieved he was free.

  11. After that • Then in 1993 Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize and then became the President of South Africa the following year. • He then retired as President and lived a peaceful life. • He died in 2013.
