  3. Rules and Regulations • Respect yourself • Listen and follow directions • Be prepared for class everyday • Use classroom time wisely • Turn in assignments on time

No Fouls or Penalties Allowed! • Visual contact to make changes • Verbal warnings • Interventions: seat change, peer help, go to another area to work, counselor contact, parent contact • Consequences: Time out in our room or another, class time out forms • Parent contact and/or conference • Administrative referral

  6. It’s Game Time! Here are the Skills Needed to Succeed in Each Quarter First Quarter • Math: numbers, place value, compare and order numbers, estimation, coordinate graphs, graphing, range, median mode, multiplication, problem solving Second Quarter • Math: division, multiplication, order of operations, identity, associative, commutative, distributive properties, measurement, area, perimeter, time, capacity, mass, problem solving

  7. Third Quarter • Math: fractions, decimals, problem solving Fourth Quarter • Math: decimals, outcomes, probability, proportional relationships, order of operations, identity, commutative, associative, distributive properties, symmetry and congruence, transformations, problem solving

  8. Reading: develop strategies to read and write, apply strategies and skills to comprehend text that is read, heard and viewed, make connections through oral and written language, and media and technology, apply strategies to create oral, written, and visual texts, apply grammar and language conventions

  9. Social Studies and Science • First Quarter: The Three Regions and Rocks and Minerals • Second Quarter: Native Americans and Electricity • Third Quarter: Colonial NC and Health and Nutrition • Fourth Quarter: Government and Animals

  10. Practice Makes Perfect! • Homework Policy • Homework is used to reinforce concepts in class. Students will also develop the needed responsibility skills that will serve them well in coming school years.  Homework is not graded but credit is given for turning in a completed assignment which is part of the grade.  Silent lunch is the consequence for not turning in an assignment. • Spelling Homework: • Spelling words will be passed out on Fridays.  We will attach them to the planner.  A parent is expected to sign the list as an assignment. It will be checked on Friday. • Home Reading: • Each student is expected to read 30 minutes a night.  Parents are asked to sign the planner nightly verifying home reading.  Parental support is greatly appreciated as we encourage students to read. • 3.Math Homework: • Math homework is usually assigned nightly.  Please check you child's planner for nightly assignments.   Credit is given when the homework is turned in first thing in the morning.  The students are expected to make their own corrections on homework when the assignment is reviewed in class. • Wordly Wise • Wordly Wise assignments run for two weeks, usually following the same schedule.  Tests are on Thursdays of the second week.  The format of the test will be matching the words to definitions and choosing the correct word for a sentence or illustrating the words.  Credit for completed homework is part of the grade. Please check the planners for these assignments. • 5.Science/Social Studies: • Study sheets will be provided for each of the tests.  Some units have projects but most of the work is done in class.   Study sheets will be posted on this web site to help with preparation for tests.

  11. The Scoreboard • Grades will be posted on line hopefully starting next week. • Students will have weekly spelling tests and timed multiplication/division tests and measurement tests. We have weekly assessments in reading for in-class studies. • Each math unit will have a test. • Each science and Social Studies unit will have a test. These study sheets and answers are posted on line on my web site. • Wordly Wise tests are every two weeks with tests being on the second Thursday. • Each student should read 2 chapter books and one non-fiction book on their level a quarter. This requires some planning to stay on top of the time. • End of Quarter tests are administered for evaluation purposes only. They are not part of the grade. • Four writing tasks are administered in the fourth grade. Two on demand prompts from the state and two content based paper done in class.

  12. Coaching Tips • Students learn better with help at home. Good support-listening to your child read, asking questions, making math meaningful at home-example cooking measurements makes a big difference. We are working to get our fourth graders more independent but they all still a little help.   13. Let’s Cheer Your Child to a Victory! • It is our job to keep the students motivated and ready to attack each day. Sometimes the small victories mean the most.
