  4. ChildLine Schools service Direct quotes from children: ‘If children know that there is a lot of help out there they wont be scared to tell’ ‘Abuse should be discussed but no one wants to talk about it’

  5. Aims The aims of the ChildLine Schools Service are: • To ensure children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. 2. To ensure children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. 3. To make them aware of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.

  6. Delivery The ChildLine Schools Service will: • Be delivered in all primary school every 2 years across England, NI, Scotland and Wales • Be focused on children from 5 to 11 years old, with a particular emphasis on 7-11 year olds. • Involve an assembly and interactive workshop

Assembly and workshop The assembly and workshop will cover: • Definitions of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual and neglect • Where to and who to go to for help – including teachers, social workers, parents • Information about ChildLine HelpLine and on line The Workshops are interactive involving games, discussions, whole class and small group activities.   8. Sun Safety • Don’t forget the annual issue of Sun Safety. Despite the economic pressures, Sunsacks is still trying to raise awareness of sun safety in primary schools, to encourage the teaching of sun safety strategies and the use of sun protection. • Have a look at the free resources on the Sunsack website and ideas for sun safety. www.sunsacks.com

  9. Refugee Week 2011 The Red Cross are offering free humanitarian education sessions to raise awareness around Refugee Week 2011, 20th - 26th June. Please contact Sara Cotton on 07595651205 or saracotton@redcross.org.uk to arrange a session or if you have any questions.

Healthy Schools Update 1 • Healthy Schools is still an active project as the Coalition Government is committed to improving the health of children and young people. • As from April 2011, Healthy Schools has been reviewed to be less bureaucratic in line with Government policy. The emphasis now is on the process being schools-led, with local support, quality assurance and recognition. • A nationally available Healthy Schools toolkit has been launched. It is hosted on the Department for Education website. • www.education.gov.uk/healthyschools • From the home page find it on Schools> Pupil Support> Pastoral Care section.

Healthy Schools Update 2 • The Whole School Review replaces both the NHSS audit tool and the Annual Review. • The much simpler Healthy Schools planning template has replaced the health and well-being improvement tool (HWIT). • Schools` data from the old tools had been transferred by the national team & emailed to schools (BUT it did not work 100%)

Healthy Schools toolkit • The toolkit is designed to enable schools to `plan, do and review` health and wellbeing improvements for their children and young people. • The toolkit is in a downloadable folder containing: - An overview of the HS approach - Examples: to show how other schools are making health and wellbeing improvements - Templates: whole school review, planning tool and a story template. - Information and frameworks based on the former support materials - identifying needs, defining outcomes, activities / interventions and review achievements.

The Healthy Schools Team • The government expects Healthy Schools to be school-led with minimal support from the local authority, hence the simplified tools. • A smaller team is supporting health and wellbeing improvements in Hampshire schools • There will be no `no cost` support for schools in the future as the Government has stopped the direct funding of Healthy Schools. • The partnership with Health and Education will continue in Hampshire but with restructuring in both Children's Services and the NHS Hampshire (PCT), service to schools will be affected. • In the future there will be a Hampshire Healthy Schools portal where schools can complete and submit their review but in the meantime follow the process.

  14. Hampshire Healthy Schools Process for Schools Email WSR and chosen health and wellbeing priorities to Healthy Schools Team representatives. Download the Healthy Schools Toolkit from the DoE / or local Healthy Schools website. Complete the Whole School Review (WSR) Template and audit health and wellbeing needs to identify priorities. Achieved all outcomes related to a priority area. Email School Story template to HS Team. Receive confirmation of Hampshire Healthy Schools Challenge Award. Whole school celebration. Complete planning template and begin to work towards health and wellbeing priorities and outcomes. Receive confirmation of Hampshire Healthy Schools Status , after WSR reviewed by Hampshire Quality Assurance Group. • Helpful Hints: • The Whole School Review (WSR) replaces the Annual Review. • It is recommended that the WSR is submitted biennially (every other year) to maintain the foundations of health and wellbeing. • Schools should select a minimum of one and no more than two health and wellbeing priorities. • A random sample of WSR will be selected for an in depth review by the Hampshire Healthy Schools Team. • The Healthy Schools Planning Template replaces the HWIT tool. It is recommended that up to 5 outcomes can be selected per priority area. • Support for schools will be provided through training days, network meetings, local Hampshire website, termly briefing sheets, PDL Newsletter and School Comms. • Healthy Schools Team representatives for WRS are: glynis.wright@hants.gov.uk and anne.mccarthy@hants.gov.uk

  16. Change4Life • In July, C4L is launching the really big summer adventure, an exciting, high-profile campaign to inspire children and their families to get active over the summer holidays. From launch onwards, families will be hearing lots about the really big summer adventure on TV, in national newspapers & at the supermarket. • A teacher resource booklet for KS 2 is being sent to schools to inspire teachers to run a really big summer adventure session towards the end of term. The booklet will be sent to schools via the School Fruit and Veg Scheme from June 6th. This will be followed by a second delivery from July 4th which will include enough really big summer adventure maps for children in Yrs 3, 4 & 5 to take home and keep them active all summer long. • C4L want to ensure as many children as possible take part and have healthy active adventures this summer. • See http://www.nhs.uk/change4life/Pages/partners-supporters.aspx

  17. Life. Live It. • Life. Live it. is a brand new free first aid teaching resource for all primary school teachers, tailor-made for teaching first aid and safety skills to children aged 5 to 11.This online teaching package is part of the British Red Cross ‘Life. Live it.’ programme to build a generation of life-savers. The easy-to-use resource is accessible online from the Red Cross website:www.redcross.org.uk/teachchildrenfirstaid

  18. Life. Live It. (Con) • Both great fun and highly interactive, ‘Life. Live it.’ First aid education for children is also directly relevant to PSHE, Citizenship,English, Science and Art & Design – with curriculum links included in the Teachers’ area of the resource.

  19. Children’s Education, Training and Publicity Programmes Child Casualties in 2009 • 105 pedestrian casualties • 73 cycling casualties • 160 vehicle occupant casualties • 338 total child casualties

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) • Schools choose one JRSO from Year Five and one from Year Six • Their job is to spread road safety messages to their school by leading assemblies, running competitions, having a notice board and planning many other fun ideas • JRSOs are trained at a training event in October – one in North Hampshire and one in South Hampshire • There are currently 146 schools taking part • For further information visit: www.hants.gov.uk/jrso

Bikeability • Bikeability is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads • The Department for Transport (DfT) supports Bikeability and the efforts of Cycling England to make it universal throughout England   • Although Bikeability is not part of the National Curriculum, under the Government's 'Travelling to school' action plan, teachers can use geography and PSHE to explain the benefits of sustainable travel

Bikeability • Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) have confirmed that it is acceptable to deliver cycle training as part of P.E lessons • Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety Team have been awarded a further grant of £350,000 from the DfT to continue to provide Bikeability cycle training to Year 6 children across the county in 2011/2012

  23. Streets Ahead • A pedestrian training scheme for Year Two children delivered in schools • The scheme teaches skills for dealing with road safety situations including: • crossing roads • using special crossing places • playing safely • choosing the safest route • The scheme is taught by volunteers who are trained by the Road Safety Team • Volunteers can be parents, staff or governors   • Last year over 4000 children were trained in schools across the county
