  1. Status of LC Muon Detector R&D Colo. State, UC Davis, Fermilab, Northern Illinois Univ., Univ. of Notre Dame, Wayne State Univ., Univ. of Texas Austin, INFN Frascati

  2. TASK: What apparatus do we need to identify/measure muons and separate them from hadrons? • Momentum from central tracking. • ID from charged particle penetration of Emcal, Hcal, SC Coil, mFe. • Matching m detector track with central track – how well? (Simulation studies) • Background environment: shower leakage? • Punchthrough, hadron rejection/fakes. • Energy deposition, min. ion. vs. Eh.

  3. Plastic Scintillator, WLS + Clear Fiber and Multi-anode PMT Plastic Scint. Strip 4 x 1 x 300 cm3 and 1.2mm WLS Fiber Thermally Fused Fiber Splice Clear Fiber 1.2 mm WLS Fiber Teflon Sleeve Joint Hamamatsu 16 – 4 x 4 mm2 MAPMT

  4. Proposal: Scint. + (WLS+Clear) Fiber + MAPMTs • Choice of Scintillator – extruded plastic strips • WLS: choice of dia., glue, key-hole groove, .. • WLS  Clear: thermal splice, optical conn. • Fiber routes, bending, securing, light tighting. • Photodetectors – MAPMTs; Other options are APDs and NIU SS det,. • Electronics – LED test source for PMT meas., scint. QA (= #p.e.s) and perhaps: • Calibration scheme. • Front end electronics/signal processing/digitz’n • In Principle: R&D Unique to LC detector

  5. R&D Goals Unique to LC Muon Sys • Simulation studies (NIU/Fermilab) • LED - pulser/calibration (WS) • MAPMTs – Learn how to use them. (WS) • APDs New tech w/ industry. (Colo State) • FE/Digitizat’n/Read out, ProtoSpecs. (UCD) • Scintillator pro’type modules to understand: mech engr, assembly, fiber optics splicing, routing, light tighting, coupling to photodet, calibration hardware. • Test Beam.

  6. R&D Accomplishments - • R&D proposals – rated excellent/barely funded. • Simulation software – framework, m & p , bb studies. - NIU/Fermilab, Frascati • MAPMT tests – LED pht spectra/yields. - WS • Fiber splicing + routing design. – ND • Prototype electronics/specs. – UCD • Scintillator procur’ment/tests. – Fermilab/NIU Good progress – funding for universities is essential for R&D progress! -

  7. Fiber Splicer Dual Heating Blocks Clear Fiber WLS Fiber 1mm dia. Fiber – Vacuum Clamps Eileen Hahn April 2004

  8. Fiber Splice Pictures 4/2004 Eileen Hahn April 2004

  9. Results at Paris • Several splices with very poor transmission (losses > 50%) • Typical transmission of ~75 - 80% • Control fibers w/100% transmission show system stability. Mitch Wayne April 2004

  10. Light trans: 1m long 1.2 mm dia. clear straightened fibers- M. Wayne/UND

  11. Straightened Fiber Splice Tests7/28/2004 M. Wayne UND

  12. 1m long scintillator gluing and light yield tests Sasha Dychkant’s Measurements of Strip Response using a Cs137 source. May 19, 2004 ~ 15 p.e.s

  13. Further Work & Reports: - • Caroline Milstene: Charged particle stepper & bb Simulation Studies Talk • Arthur Maciel: Framework – planar detectors • Paul Karchin: MAPMT Tests - LED Pulser Development/Gain Measurements Talk • Mitch Wayne: Fiber Optics (not here) • Mani Tripathi: Prototype Electronics, Digitization, Readout Talk • Bob Wilson: APD developments Talk • Marcello Piccolo: RPCs Talk • Vishnu Zutshi: Tail Catcher Talk

  14. Much m/PID R&D To Do • Simulation – Fake rejection from hadrons w/tracking? Meas Eh for penetrating hadrons? • Scintillator – calibration scheme not known. • Detector plane technology – gluing/keyhole/? testing methods & facilities. (PMT area Lab 6) • Fiber Optics – eff. splices/trans., fiber routes, multiplexing schemes, etc. • MAPMT or alternate choice? • Electronics for testing and specifications Requires broad participation of international scientists and funding.
