  1. MANAGING SELF IS MANAGING TEAM

  2. KEY POINT MANAGE SELF FIRST • When we focus on management of self we are in the strongest position to manage or contribute to our team. • This means cultivating a sense of self awareness. • And an awareness that teams are emotional systems. • Emotions are contagious. Anxiety breeds anxiety. Calm breeds calm.

  3. The Emotional Process • The ongoing connections between people through emotional expressions; but known in actions and reactions; always interactive; emotion is never singular. • We live in emotional systems (everything is mutually influenced)

  4. Interrelated/Interdependent

  5. DEFINING ORGANIZATIONAL HEALTH • Health is a dynamic equilibrium of all the forces and elements surrounding a human being or organism. It is a struggle for balance despite injury or disease. But the balancing act of health is temporary. Wholeness is not attainable. The drive toward health is present in every living thing. Health is not a state that one acquires, but a condition that needs to be recreated constantly. Like disease, health can spread.

  6. So, health is not a state that one acquires, but a condition that needs to be recreated constantly. Like disease, health can spread. • Therefore by improving our own level of emotional maturity / health in relation to others, others tend to function better too.

  7. Teach Team Members the Importance of Managing Their Anxiety by Managing Yours • Our conflict with others often arises when we encounter their anxiety or they encounter ours. When we are anxious, we are more automatic in the way we behave. We are less imaginative and thoughtful. To relate well to others we need to manage our own anxiety in order to bring clarity, decisiveness, and justice to the situation.

  8. Anxiety • Basic human emotion present in every person and within every relationship. • Automatic response to a threat – real or imagined. • Derives from the Latin verb angere, meaning “to cause pain by squeezing.” • Other words hewn from the noun form angustia – include anger, angst, and angina. • Not something that simply happens within us. Anxiety connects us.

  9. When Emotional Processes Run Amuck!

  10. Strong anxiety within an organization or team will… • Limit resiliency • Lessen learning abilities • Magnify differences between people or groups • Increase negative diagnosis of others • Spawn data • Diminish self-awareness • Healthy Congregations Workshop 2; Session 1

  11. As A Leadership Coach I Can Help Your Team Members MasterSelf Differentiation: • The capacity to define self to others and still stay connected with them. • Becoming aware of the particular lens through which we are looking at the world. • Becoming aware of the particular lens through which others might be looking at the world.

  12. The importance of maintaining a less-anxious presence. • Regulating one’s anxiety; not being automatic or reactive • Getting to know our “buttons” or blind spots helps us avoid Reactivity (Automatic, instinctive, rigid, obsessive, compulsive, defensive, with little thought or feeling reflexive) and be non-reactive (reflective, intentional, objective, more clarity.)

  13. VALUES…everyone has them. They are the motivating & organizing tendencies that guide… Our energies Our perceptions Our attitudes Our emotional responses Our behaviors They reveal what a person believes the purpose of life is….what they are here for. The enneagram is a tool that can help you put the values that motivate each member of your team in conversation with the values of your organization. The values of Goodness (1); Love (2); Efficiency (3); Originality (4); Wisdom (5); Loyalty (6); Joy (7); Power (8) or Peace(9) are mapped out on the enneagram symbol. Values orient and focus our vision. They tell us what’s important & why we exist.

  14. VISION • The focus of our attention…what it is that we see when we view • the world • our situation • our circumstances • one another • our organization Organizations and the people within them look at the world through a particular lens, a schema - A pattern imposed on complex reality or experience to assist in explaining it, mediate perception, or guide response. • Ever gone to a movie with someone, come out talking about that movie and wondered, “Did we see the same movie”? • “We don’t see what we look at, we see what we look for. Expectation directs attention. We see what we expect to see. If you expect to see a friendly universe around you, you will probably see compassion, altruism and good humor. If you expect to see a hostile universe, you will probably see violence, selfishness and treachery. Anticipation distorts perception. Previewing distorts viewing.” - Frank Rivers The Way of the Owl.

  15. I combine my knowledge of systems theory and the enneagram of personality to help you gain clarity on how you and those you work with see and approach the mission, vision and values of your organization.Chances are good that the result will be a decrease in turnover and an increase in team morale, productivity and over all synergism. BETTER, WORSE OR ABOUT RIGHT?
