Health Matters! Mr. Stewart February, 2013. Today… (40 years old). This was me… (Grade 6). And this was me…(6 years ago). Then vs. Now…Oh my…. What happened to me?. When I was young…. 1. I was active (sports, friends,…) 2. I ate well 3. I got proper sleep I made healthy choices!.

  4. And this was me…(6 years ago)

  5. Then vs. Now…Oh my…

  6. What happened to me? When I was young…. 1. I was active (sports, friends,…) 2. I ate well 3. I got proper sleep I made healthy choices!

  7. “Bad” Choices As I became older… 1. I watched more TV (less active) 2. I ate poorly (fast food and junk food) 3. I slept less (go to bed late) I made UNhealthy choices!

  8. Healthy Choices Are Not Easy, Right? • Saying “no” to pizza and hamburgers • Playing sports and not playing video games • Going to bed earlier • Not worrying about so many things Do you make healthy choices?

  11. Chris’ 4 Healthy Choices 4 things you can start doing today… 1. Say “no” to sugar! 2. Become more active! 3. Go to bed earlier! 4. Stop worrying! Start by doing just one of these TODAY!

  13. Why are good foods so important?

  14. Food = Building Blocks Most foods contain important things our body needs: • Vitamins (A, B, C ) • Minerals (Calcium, and Iron) • Protein • Carbohydrates • And Fats? … Yes, we need “good” fats!

  15. Protein? Protein is used by our body to: • Repair our body • Help our body grow (build muscle) Which foods contain protein? • meats, fish, eggs, oats, soy bean, nuts, milk, yogurt, and many more…

  16. Body Needs Protein Our body also needs protein because: • Keeps body healthy by resisting diseases • Prevents us from being weak • We need muscle!

  17. Carbohydrates? Our body uses carbohydrates for: • Energy Our body takes the “Carbs” and converts them to: • Glucose (glucose is just “sugar”) Which foods contain carbs?

  21. Best Time for Carbs? When do we need the mostenergy? • Morning? • Afternoon? • Evening? • Before bed? • Before a playing a sport?

  23. We Need Fats? Many foods contain fats, such as: • Meat • Fish • Nuts • Olive oil Our body needs good fat to keep us healthy!

  24. Bad Fats Bad fatsare very bad for our body: • Butter and cheese (animal fats) • Chocolate (saturated fats) • Fried or fast foods (trans fat) • Snack foods (trans fat) Our body does not need these fats… They damage our body!

  25. Calories? What are calories? Calories are simply “energy” • Body uses calories for energy. • Calories come from food.

  26. How do we grow? • We grow by eating healthy foods and water • Food has calories What if we eat too many calories? • Extra calories become fat • Extra protein, extra carbs, extra fat, or alcohol ALL can become fat!

  27. Why does our body create fat? Answer: If we eat more calories than we need, our body “stores” those extra calories as fat. Question: Which extra calories can become fat? • Protein • Carbohydrates • Fat

  28. Answer ALL calories can become fat! • Eat too much salad = fat • Eat too much meat = fat • Drink too much milk = fat

  29. How do we lose fat? There are two ways to lose fat: • Eat healthy • Eat good foods • Eat regularly (don’t skip meals and NEVER DIET!) • Eat only what your body needs! • Exercise more

  31. “Burning” Calories? What does it mean to “burn” calories? • Our body needs “energy” when we exercise • It uses calories (fat + muscle) for energy

  32. How many calories? Examples of exercise: • Running for 50 mins = 275 calories • Swimming for 50 mins = 275 calories • Soccer for 35 minutes = 275 calories 1 Snickers Bar = 275 calories!

Why is sleep important? • Poor sleep actually causes our body to produce fat! • Poor sleep causes our body to lose muscle! • Poor sleep makes us hungrier! • Good sleep helps our body lose fat! • Good sleep helps our body to repair and create muscle! • Good sleeps helps us fight disease and stay healthy!

  36. How many hours of sleep..? Recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night!
