History of the Proposal ECOCHROM IMS-GROWTH Project • - Chromium deposits : used in mechanical applications : shafts, pistons, axes, … • European market about : 1 billion Euros. • Wear and corrosion resistance, low friction coefficient, hardness, non-tarnishing. • Industrial Chromium Plating processes use CrVI . • Toxicity of CrVI : 0.1 mg/L, CrIII : 3 mg/L. • Development of hard trivalent chromium processes. • a CRAFT Project : dating back to 1997… Toronto Meeting Sept 23-27, 2002

Aspects of Craft Project ECOCHROM IMS-GROWTH Project • Official starting date : 01-03-98 • 2 year project : 4 tasks (67.5 Men-Months) • Improvement of the different aspects of the bath (chemistry, environmentally friendly aspects…), • Building one prototype (150 L), • Building 150 L systems for each SME partner, • Building one 600 L prototype. • Participants : D, F, Fin, S • End of the project : 01-09-99 (28-02-00) Toronto Meeting Sept 23-27, 2002

CONCLUSIONS ECOCHROM IMS-GROWTH Project Chlorine gaz reduced from 100 ppm to 0.5 ppm. • Thick coatings > 100µm, 3µm/min. • Sensitive to some impurities : copper… • Filtration of the bath (CrVI - Ni, Cu, …) • Intrinsic Corrosion resistance poorer than CrVI. • After heat treatment (300°C, 2 h): • Hardness : 1600HV100 • Wear resistance : 6 – 8 fold CrVI • Pilot scale results (150 L) • Poor conductivity 50 L/dm², • 800°C, 336 h : microhardness : 700 HV100 – High Temperature.
