The KS4 Core Curriculum for 2020-2022 In response to national curriculum changes in Wales the structure at Whitchurch High School from September 2020 has the following core components and are delivered over a 2 week cycle: • Mathematics x 2 GCSE’s: 7 hours/fortnight in year 10; 8 hours in year 11 • English x 2 GCSE’s: 7 hours/fortnight in year 10; 8 hours in year 11 • Science x 2 GCSE’s: 9 hours/fortnight for core • Welsh (1 GCSE): (three year course which started September 2019) 3 hours/fortnight • Religious Studies (Short Course – ½ GCSE): 2 hours/fortnight • Physical Education (non-examination course): 2 hours/fortnight • PSE/Tutorial (non-examination course): 1 hour per fortnight in year 10; 2 hours in year 11

English Language • GCSE in English Language will focus primarily on the functional aspects of language needed in everyday lives. • Oracy – Non-examination assessment (20%) • Individual research presentation based on set themes (10%) • Group discussion to written and /or visual stimuli provided by the WJEC (10%) • Two external examinations – Reading and Writing (80%) • Description, Narration and Exposition (40%) • Argumentation, Persuasion and Instructional (40%) • One tier of entry A* - G https://WJEC GCSE English language video /

English Literature • GCSE in English Literature • Non-examination assessment (25%) • Two hours to complete: Section A: Thematic essay question on a Shakespeare play Section B: Written task based on thematically linked poems • Two external examinations (75%) • Based on individual texts • Two tiers of entry Higher A* - D Foundation C - G

Maths Numeracy • TWO GCSEs in Mathematics: • Numeracy: focus on the application of mathematical knowledge with relation to real contexts where possible. - reading and problem solving skills Two external examinations (non-calculator and calculator) - examined in November year 11 Three tiers of entry: Higher A*- C Intermediate B - E Foundation D - G

  10. Science • Science Qualifications: • GCSE Core Science (Double award) • GCSE Biology, Chemistry & Physics (Triple Science)

Core Science GCSE CORE SCIENCE (Double Award): • 9 hours per fortnight • Study Biology, Chemistry & Physics. • 2 written exams in each subject worth 15% each (total of 6 external exams) - one is sat in each subject at the end of year 10 • Practical exam in spring term of year 11 worth 10% of total qualification (marked externally by WJEC) • Suitable for potential A Level Scientists BTEC SCIENCE:

  12. Triple Science TRIPLE SCIENCE – Biology, Chemistry & Physics: • Pupils will select it as one of their option subjects (total of 15 lessons per fortnight in year 10). (B grade and level 6 in Science at the end of key stage 3 is required for this option) • Separate GCSE awards in Biology, Chemistry & Physics at end of Y11. • 2 written exams in each subject worth 45% each. • Practical assessment in each subject worth 10% in year 11 spring term • Suitable for potential A Level Scientists

  13. KS4 Curriculum Option Subjects • Three option subjects make up the remainder of the curriculum and contribute 18 hours over a 2 week cycle in year 10 and 15 hours in year 11. OPTION (Non-Core) SUBJECTS COVER 5 AREAS OF LEARNING • Expressive Arts • Health and Well-being • Humanities • Languages • Science & Technology • Option grid constructed based on free choice decisions that pupils make.

  15. IVET Subjects VOCATIONAL GCSEs: A variety of vocational courses are available. These courses are made up of a number of units. At least one of the core units will be an external examination/assessment which must be passed for an overall grade to be achieved. The remainder of the course is assessed through practical or written tasks completed in school and at home.

IVET Subjects Examples of some potential vocational courses: • Tourism - Level 1 & 2 • Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community – Level 1 & 2 • Sport and Coaching Principles – Level 1 & 2 • CoPE- Level 1 & 2 • SWEET – Level 1 & 2 • Hospitality and Catering – Level 1 & 2 • Skills Challenge Certificate – Level 1 & 2 • Level 1 is equivalent to D - G GCSE grade • Level 2 is equivalent to A* - C GCSE grade

HOW WILL WE SUPPORT? • INDIVIDUAL LEARNING PATHWAY PLAN • Students have been issued with an ILPP booklet which will guide them through the option process and decision making process. • It will help direct them to places where they can find out more information and will give them ideas on career options • It will also outline the timeline of events and support that we will put in place to help with their decisions moving forward. • http://www.whitchurchhs.com/Curriculum/KS4SubjectInformation/ILPP.html

GUIDANCE & CONSULTATION PROCESS • KEY STAGE 4 SUBJECT OPTION TALKS IN LESSONS AND ASSEMBLY: December 2019 onwards • KS4 OPTION OPEN EVENING IN UPPER SCHOOL: 16th January 2020, 5.00 – 7.00pm (Upper school) • FREE CHOICE SURVEY: 20th January – 2nd Feb 2020 – the decisions made at this stage are used to help formulate the Key Stage 4 option grid.

  20. OPTION GRID: 2019-2021: Current year 10 This grid ensured that students could secure 96.3% of the subject choices they made in free choice survey.
