Research Experience • 22 yr externally funded research program (>$2M federally funded research grants –NIH/NSF) • 35 peer-reviewed publications • 5 long-term collaborative research efforts • 3 doctoral students, 5 Masters students, 5 post-doctoral fellows, 4 Faculty Research Assistants • Co-organized scientific meetings (1 national & 2 regional) • 8 yrs NIH panel member for pre- and post-doctoral grants • Graduate thesis committee member (>50 students from majors across campus)

  3. Administrative Experience • 6 yrs- Director, Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Program • > 70 doctoral students, 12 PSM students • 6 core courses students team-taught by faculty from across campus • led yearly recruitment efforts including trips to conferences attended by minority students • Co-taught Scientific Skills and Ethics (MCB 557); Molecular and Cellular Techniques (MCB 525) • Co-PI, 3 funding proposals (NIH U24 Center proposal; NSF Multiuser Research grant for new multiphotonconfocal) • 1yr- Interim Director, Professional Science Masters program • > 30 non-thesis MS students • 6 core courses

Teaching & Curricular Experience • Biology (~1,200 students): • Principles of Biology (BI 21X) ; Genetics (BI 311); Cell Biology (BI 460/461); Phage genomics laboratory (BI 21X) • Zoology (~500 students): • Internship (Z410); Embryology and Development (Z425/525) • Honors: Genetics, Medicine & Human Condition (HC399) • ~36 students • Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Neurobiology of Drosophila course (3 yrs, 36 students) • Participant in 3 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Grants & new submission • Attended 2009 Vision & Change Conference; 2011 HHMI Summer Institute for Undergraduate Biology Instruction

COS Curriculum • Current strengths: • Excellent faculty • Rigorous programs serving majors and non-majors • Low barriers to cross department faculty interactions • Goals: • Increase laboratory experiences (esp. inquiry-based) for majors • Facilitate incorporation of active learning approaches by faculty • Facilitate cross departmental instruction to bring in new topics- big data, bioinformatics

  6. Undergraduate Advising Experience • Biology advisor: • >200 students • Pre-medical committee member • Undergraduate research students • 33 Biology or Zoology students • 12 Honors/International theses

COS Advising Current strengths: • Culture of successful professional and departmental undergraduate advising Concerns: • Recruitment and retention, especially for minority students Goals : • Facilitate smooth transition for School of Life Sciences advising • Maintain/strengthen the local advising model/ interface with new 1st year advising plans in themed residential communities • Facilitate outreach and contact to COS students to improve retention at all achievement levels, including minority students

  8. Assessment Experience • Incorporation of assessment into my own courses • BI 21X Phage Genomics Lab • Zoology Department undergraduate assessment • Programmatic assessment for MCB and PSM program

COS Assessment Current strengths: • Several departments use good mix of assessment tools, direct and indirect measures • Individual units and faculty engagement in new pedagogy and assessment Goals: • Use existing assessment information to identify problems and reward success in meeting instructional goals • Alignment with OSU on programmatic assessment/develop new assessment tools

Overall Goals • Facilitating a collaborative environment between faculty, COS administration, advisors to further educational mission • Furthering the creation of a welcoming environment in the COS to students • Facilitating new or strengthening existing courses and laboratories to continue bringing high quality instruction to students

  11. Sum up • Diverse experience – teaching, advising, administration of an interdisciplinary program • Strengths: adaptable, collegial, collaborative, involved across campus • Long-term commitment to education – especially undergraduate education and training
