There also seems to be a message for the party’s turncoats who left Congress to join AAP, indicating that the party will not offer them a safe passage. The political tale of Seelampur The political story of Seelampur dates back to October 2024 when Zubair Ahmad, the son of Mateen Ahmad, a five-time MLA from Seelampur and a veteran Congress leader, joined AAP. A few days later, Mateen Ahmad himself also joined AAP. In a tit-for-tat move, the sitting MLA from Seelampur, AAP leader Abdul Rahman, switched sides and joined Congress in December 2024. Now AAP fields Matin Ahmad's son & Congress gives ticket to Abdul Rahman Now, AAP has fielded Zubair Ahmad from Seelampur, while Congress has given a ticket to Abdul Rahman. The defections of Mateen Ahmad and his son from Congress to AAP sent a message of the political erosion of the Congress party in Delhi. By inducting Abdul Rahman, who switched allegiance from AAP to Congress, the party wants to show that it will not let AAP take away its political base. With Rahul Gandhi kickstarting his rallies from Seelampur, the party wants to send the message that it will take on AAP head-on. What happened in 2020 assembly election ? In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Abdul Rahman made a significant impact by securing 72,694 votes, defeating BJP's Kaushal Kumar Mishra and Congress’s then-leader Mateen Ahmad.
