Summarising main ideas – Putting in order, answering questions, key words, making headings Asking questions – Thinking aloud, questions to show comprehension Discuss and compare opinions – What you thought of the text, how useful or enjoyable it was, how well you and pupil read. Use of Two stars and a Wish. After Reading Learning and Teaching Scotland

  3. Link to prior knowledge –Think about what you have learned, relate to own experiences. Activities -Confirm knowledge and understanding. Use art work, IT, make quizzes, maps, charts, etc. After Reading Learning and Teaching Scotland

  4. Read aloud to pupils, modelling good reading and thinking. Silent reading – both pupil and tutor read silently alone for short time. Echo reading – read a section to pupil, pupil then reads same section. Any other suggestions? Different Approaches Learning and Teaching Scotland

  5. Using websites You can find out about authors, play games and take part in activities, read reviews of books and write your own. Magazines and newspapers Pupils come across these in everyday life. Check for suitability. Comics and graphic novels Add these if the pupil shows an interest. Pictures, action and humour can be very motivating. Check for suitability. Some graphic novels can have very adult themes. Look at LTS literacy website for some ways to use graphic novels and some other general resources. Varied Reading Materials Learning and Teaching Scotland

  6. Confidence and self-esteem –Have you become more confident? Believe in yourself more? How has this come about? Communication and social skills – In what ways have you had to interact with people? Any challenges here? Organisational skills – What have you had to organise? Teamwork – When and in what ways have you worked as a team? What next? – How can you use these skills in the future? What have you learned about yourself? Remember Recall of basic facts e.g. times, dates, places, main ideas etc Understand Pupils interpret information, summarise, infer, explain ideas, predict Compare and look for patterns Similarities and differences, looking at parts of texts Evaluate Form opinions, judge what you have read Use and create Apply knowledge, solve problems, produce new ideas Effective Questioning and Thinking Learning and Teaching Scotland
