Pro-E-Bike: Promoting Electric Bikes and Scooters for Urban Transport

Pro-E-Bike aims to promote the use of electric bicycles and scooters for delivery of goods and passenger transport in urban areas. The project seeks to develop action plans, test technology, and stimulate wider usage of e-bikes through policy development and knowledge transfer.

Background Congestion in Brussels, Photo credit ECF (Fabian Küster) Due to air and noise pollution, congestion and low energy efficiency, there is a needto rethink urban transport in Europe and to open a path for clean vehicles such as electrical bicycles and scooter. Opportunities The European Commission has put electric vehicles at the heart of itscommitmentto the long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions. Challenges Potential for e-bikes is unexplored and the market for such vehicles is still in early development phase (different within Europe). Project summary Pro-E- Bike aims to contribute to cleaner, cheaper and more energy efficienttransport inurban areas due to increased use of electric bicycles and scooters (E-bikes) among delivery companies and public administration. • Testing of technology and tools in 25 pilot companies • Development of action plans for 8 pilot cities • Result: clean, cheapand energy efficient delivery (goods and services) and passenger transport IEE/12/856/SI2.644759 Duration: 01/04/2013 - 31/03/2016

Objectives and main steps Project objectives: • Replacement of conventionally fuelled vehicles within target groups with E- bikes • E-bike market uptake • Development of policies that stimulate wider usage of E-bikes in urban transport Steps: • Identification of best practices • Testing and analyzing technology (pilot projects) • Transfer of knowledge and experiences • Development of tools • Connecting stakeholders • Extensive dissemination of project results IEE/12/856/SI2.644759 Duration: 01/04/2013 - 31/03/2016
