  4. Sources of Quackery • Radio • TV • Newspapers • Magazines • Books • Sales people • Health food stores

  5. Common Confusion Organic vs. Natural • Organic: raised/grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or drugs • Natural: no preservatives used, but all of the above may be used • Claim to be more nutritious and less hazardous • May still contain pesticides • Major difference is price

  6. Fad Diets • Based on one persons ideas • Method other than calorie restriction Vitamins & Mineral Supplements • People with irregular eating habits, favour them • Common misconception you need to take supplements • Most are found in food we eat, as discussed

  7. Food Allergies, Intolerances & Sensitivities Food Sensitivity -adverse reaction to a food, that others can safely eat Food Allergies -reaction caused by a reaction of immune system to a protein in a specific food **protein is identified by the immune system as being harmful**

  8. How an Allergic Reaction Happens • Eat food • Body releases something called histamines • Reaction is caused in respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin or cardiovascular system **food allergies affect as many as 6% of young children and 3-4% of adults**

  9. Food Intolerance • Sensitivity that does not affect immune system • Takes normal sized portion to produce intolerance symptoms • Originate in gastrointestinal system • Inability to digest or absorb certain foods • Ex: Celiac  Gluten Intolerance **1% of population is Celiac**
