  1. Basic ELL Information “Language.. does things: it constructs social categories, it gives orders, it persuades us, it justifies, explains, gives reasons, excuses. It constructs reality. It moves people against other people. (TRC, 1998:7,124,294)”

  2. Requirements to be in ELL program • Must have marked a language OTHER then English on the Home Language Survey • Must have met eligibility criteria on the W-APT screener • Must have parent notification on file (not a legal requirement) • To exit the program: • Must score a 5 or higher on the WIDA ACCESS Tier B or Tier C • Must be proficient or advanced on the MCT3 English assessment or the English II state test • Must provide documentation samples from the classroom achieving classroom criteria • Note: An ELL student is just a student that is not proficient in the English language. They are eligible to be SPED, Gifted and a part of the Tier process.

  3. Language Service Plans • MUST have individualized goals for each student regardless of level • They hold the school accountable and keep us in compliance regarding accommodations • If your signature is on it then you are responsible for making sure it is followed thru.

  4. State Testing/Accommodations • LSP’s must be completed and on file for every ELL student • Documentation must be available to back up accommodations • A system needs to be created for monitoring accommodations in classroom. • An ELL Accommodation form must completed and placed in the STC audit binder

  5. School Responsibilities • Identify potential ELL students ensuring a HLS is filled out • A staff member on site must be certified to give the W-APT screener to identify ELL students. • Ensure an LSP is filled out for each ELL student • Make sure all students are receiving adequate services • Monitor teachers that instruct ELL students (systems for accommodations, failures, etc) • Parent communication-Important letters sent home must be translated. This includes field trips, testing, illness, etc.

  6. Supplemental Services • Edmark • Imagine Learning- 58 licenses district wide –10.13.1.5/manager This is an intervention that is student led and has a built in data tracker. IDEAL for our kids that are Tiered! • Rosetta Stone- 50 licenses district wide • Tutoring • Brainchild’s- Math and ELA cartridges • Journeys- ELL supplemental materials
