  1. Guidance for Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) &Aviation Databus Software & Complex Electronic Hardware Standardization Conference John Lewis, AIR-120, Technical Programs Branch, Washington DC Email: john.lewis@faa.gov, (202) 493-4841 July 26, 2005

  2. Presentation Overview • Draft Advisory Circular (AC) for Integrated Modular Avionics, AC 20-IMA • Draft AC for Aviation Databus Assurance, AC 20-Databus

  3. AC 20-IMA, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development and Certification Considerations, RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124) • Why are we writing a new AC for IMA? • TSO C-153 and AC 20-145 addresses IMA hardware elements (software limited). • In July 2002, a joint RTCA/EUROCAE committee was established to develop new guidance for IMA. • New AC will recognize new guidance for IMA via RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124).

  4. AC 20-IMA, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development and Certification Considerations, RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124) • What are the terms of reference for SC-200 and WG-60? • Support certification of all classes of aircraft implementing IMA. • Key characteristics of IMA defined. • Propose and document means for the stand-alone approval of modular avionics separate from the applications. • Transfer of certification credit and reuse of IMA components and systems. • Coordinate IMA issues with other groups.

  5. AC 20-IMA, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development and Certification Considerations, RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124) • Term of reference (continue) • Create guidance to address the following safety and performance issues: • Partitioning & resource management • Fault management & health monitoring • Design/developmental design assurance • Configuration management • Environmental qualification • Safety & Security • Considerations for continued airworthiness

  6. AC 20-IMA, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development and Certification Considerations, RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124) • Who are the members of SC-200 and WG-60? • Co-chairs are Cary Spitzer (AvioniCon) for RTCA SC-200 and Rene Eveleens (National Aerospace Laboratory) for EUROCAE WG-60. • Government participants include FAA, CAA-UK, & Transport Canada, US Air Force, & NASA Langley. • Industry members include Boeing, Airbus, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, Smiths Aerospace, Verocel, Thales, TTTech, ARINC, Diehl Avionik, MITRE, Ferrel & Associates, and others.

  7. AC 20-IMA, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development and Certification Considerations, RTCA/DO-IMA (ED-124) • What is the schedule for release of AC 20-IMA? • Last meeting (God willing) of SC-200/WG-60 to finish disposition of FRAC comments scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2005. • Submit final document to RTCA for PMC approval in October, 2005. • Draft AC 20-IMA ready by Sept. 2005 • Publish AC 20-IMA by Sept. 30, 2006

  8. AC 20-Databus, Aviation Databus Assurance • Why are we writing a new AC for aviation databus assurance? • New databuses and databus components are being proposed for certification projects • Modern databus technology are more complex while providing increased performance & bandwidth, greater flexibility in configuration, and reduced assembly, design, and integration time. • Establish evaluation criteria to address safety concerns for aviation databuses.

  9. AC 20-Databus, Aviation Databus Assurance • What types of new databuses are being considered for certification projects? • CAN (controller area network) • TTCAN (time-triggered CAN) • TTP/C (time-triggered communication/protocol) • ByteFlight • FlexRay • FireWire (IEEE 1394)

  10. AC 20-Databus, Aviation Databus Assurance • What are the evaluation criteria categories in AC 20-Databus? • Safety • Data integrity • Databus performance • Software and hardware assurance • Electromagnetic compatibility • Verification and validation • Configuration management • Security assurance

  11. AC 20-Databus, Aviation Databus Assurance • What is the schedule for release of AC 20-Databus? • FAA coordination of draft AC completed by 7 August, 2005 • Public coordination completed by 7 September, 2005 • Release of final AC in October/November, 2005 timeframe
