Hanukkah(Wikipedia’s basic definition) • Hanukkah (Chanukah) is the Festival of Lights • “eight-day holiday celebrating the rededication of the altar” • The first during Macabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE • starts on the 25th day of Kisley according to Hebrew Calendar • Can occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar • The festival is observed by the lighting of the Menorah • One candle a night, placed right to left, lit left to right • extra light called a Shamash, • Hebrew for "guard" or "servant" is used to light the 8 candles and is given a distinct location, usually higher or lower than the others.
