Practical use of evidence: Can teachers and researchers shed any light?
Who we are, why are we working together? Well-established charity Provides independent research, evaluation, consultancy and assessment tools. Produces high quality research evidence. NFER impact team set up to support process of practitioners using evidence to change practice. NFER believes social interaction key to using evidence to improve practice. Over 30,000 students and 3000 teachers Independent Schools and State-funded Academies – our USP? A national group, and growing fast. What ties diverse schools together? How can being a group member improve teaching and learning? A commitment to finding out and sharing ‘what works’. A shared interest in bridging the gap between teacher practice and education research
What do we want to know? • Seeing past the stereotypes? • Inside the black box. • Encouraging what works – enablers vs. barriers and then measuring the impact.
Research design – a 3 stage project? • Stage one: telephone-based interviews. • Up to 20 schools across the country – diversity. • Heads or SLT responsible for T&L or CPD. • Stage two: in-depth case study visits. • Half-day interviews – teachers, middle leaders • SLT, teaching assistants, school governors. • Stage three: dependant on 1&2 – developing toolkits, or best practice models for teachers using research – and trialling them?
The results so far… Based on 20 telephone interviews with UL senior school leaders and 22 case-study interviews in 4 schools. Emerging findings: Three more school visits planned; report and tools available in May.
The results so far… Some examples of challenges, enablers and further support required to encourage the use of research evidence in schools
Stage 3: over to you! Post-it note challenge... EASE OF IMPLEMENTATION LIKELIHOOD OF FUNDING? RELEVANCE TO RESEARCH COMMUNITITY T&L IMPACT
