  2. Zechariah the Prophet • The audience and occasion for preaching are the same for Zechariah as for Haggai. God’s people needed stirring up to rebuild the Temple. • Zechariah worked with Haggai to motivate the people to finish building the temple (there was no building from 536 to 520 B.C.).

  3. Outline • Introduction (1:1-6) • Visions of Zechariah (1:7 – 6:15) • Questions of Zechariah (7:1 – 8:23) • Burdens of Zechariah (9:1 – 14:21)

  4. Review #1 Vision of the horses (1:7-17): the temple will be built and Jerusalem will prosper once again #2 Vision of the four horns (1:18-21): Israel’s enemies will be cast down

  5. Review #3 Vision of the measuring line (2:1-13): Jerusalem will be inhabited (note the Messianic prediction, “many nations”, in 2:11) #4 Vision of the cleansing of Joshua (3:1-10): the priesthood is cleansed (note the Messianic prediction, “my servant the Branch,” in 3:8-11)

  11. Lessons for Today • Spiritual success is not accomplished by “might nor by power” alone, but by the Lord’s Spirit (Eph. 3:16; 6:10-18) • Do not despise the “day of small things” (Rev. 3:8) • We must be faithful so as not to let our “candlestick” be removed (Rev. 2:5)

  12. Lessons for Today • Stealing and lying (false swearing) are wrong and will be punished by the Lord (Rom. 13:9; Eph. 4:25-28; Col. 3:9; Rev. 21:8) • The offender is consumed (Jas. 5:2-3) • The Lord wants wickedness removed from our lives (Acts 8:22; 1 Cor. 5:8; Jas. 1:21; 1 Pet. 2:1, 16)

  13. Lessons for Today • The Lord sees all of his creation and accomplishes his will (Heb. 4:12-13) • The Branch (Jer. 23:6-7; 33:14-18) will... Build his temple (Eph. 2:21-22) Rule on his throne (1 Cor. 15:25) Be a priest (Heb. 8:1-2) Counsel with peace (Col. 3:15) Bless those who are far off (Acts 2:39)

  14. Lessons for Today • We must diligently obey the voice of the Lord (2 Thess. 1:8)
