Balance of Power • For many years Europe was moderately stable because of complicated alliance systems • The major European nations attempted to remain of equal strength militarily and in their alliances
Militarism • Building up of armies • Naval arms race between Germany and Britain • Britain had the best navy in the world • Race to build Dreadnaughts and Dreadnaught cruisers • The race became competitive and eventually Germany lost- B had 38 and G had 24
Dreadnaught 17,900 tons; 526 ft in length; ten 12 inch guns; eighteen 4 inch guns; five torpedo tubes; max belt armour 11 inches; top speed of 21.6 knots
Alliances • Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy • Triple Entente or Allies: France, Britain and Russia
Nationalism • Important because the Balkans had many different ethnic groups who didn’t want to be part of Austria Hungary- wanted their own country • Balkans is know as the powder keg of Europe
