  1. INFORMATION Film makers in film industry use various media to convert their scripts to photographic reality. VFX can be categorized into:- Matte Painting | Rotoscoping Compositing | Motion Tracking

  2. History Visual effects augment live action but artists and tools are used for computer graphic animated movies, titles, logos, 2D to 3D conversion etc. In earlier days Film makers used matte painting, miniature models trick photography to give special effects which is now perfected by the application of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).

  3. There are commonly used software and techniques in Film Industry to create visual effects. In traditional cinemas matte paintings were painted on large sheets of glass, which are painted digitally nowadays to generate 3D environments. Once the photographed images are projected on glass panels using rotoscope by the animators, images look lively. This process is named as rotoscoping which is done by computers presently.

  4. Rotoscoping is the technique of physically modifying or video footage frame by frame. It creates perfect illusion of a set, location or landscape which is not possible in real life..

  5. Compositing is the process of combining several motions into one composite motion creating an illusion that all those motions are parts of the same scene. Compositing is digital image manipulation. In the digital method of compositing, software commands label a narrowly defined colour as the part of an image to be replaced.

  6. Compositing is also named as Chroma key, blue screen, green screen etc. Chroma key composting is a visual effects technique which is used in removing a background from the subject of a photo or video. This technique is mostly preferred in news casting and motion pictures. For example, in live newscasts news presenter seems to be standing in front of a map or live actions goes on behind him, though in reality it’s a blue or green background. Blue and green colors are preferably used because they are distinct from most human skin colors.

  7. Match moving It is a technique referred to as motion tracking which allows insertion of computer graphics into live action. Motion capture requires special cameras and sensors and a controlled environment. Match moving is mostly software based established visual-effects tool used in live Television Broadcasts. Currently real time camera tracking is widely used in feature film production to allow virtual characters to be inserted in post production to visualize live on-set. This is beneficial in helping directors and actors to improve their performances as both real and non-real characters can be choreographed together. They are no longer performing in blue or green screens.

  8. Motion tracking captures motion of objects or people. In animated movies animated character movements are made by tracing an actor’s motions and movements. These recorded moves are projected onto animation table frame wise with right position, scale, introduction and motion in respect to the captured objects which replicates exactly the live-action movements of the actor. Motion capture method is extensively used to produce films which simulate the look of live action cinema.

  9. Video tracking systems employ a motion model which describes motion of targeted image as per the different possible motions of the object. It’s used in security and surveillance, human-computer interaction, video communication, traffic control, medical imaging.

  10. Clean up animation is the process of creating the final drawings in a finished movie. A rough drawing once approved by the director is given to a clean-up artist to prepare clean versions of the drawings. These artists are responsible for the final and finished look of the shot. VFX is widely used in Hollywood movies and has made a successful entry into Indian Film Industry too. It is growing at a faster pace with adoption of new technology and advancements.
