Before starting, why yet another desktop grid? • Not all resource providers are altruist • The EELA-2 desktop grid is formed by the federation of the handful of desktops spread across many sites • For instance, the ˜50 desktops in the Distributed Systems lab at UFCG • This federation works as a peer-to-peer system in which peers are selfish entities • One needs an incentive mechanism to promote collaboration • As far as I know, OurGrid is the only desktop grid middleware that provides such a feature • We call it the Network of Favours sharing policy
So many things to say,so little time!! :-( • They say “a picture is worth 1,000 words” ... ... let me try to summarise what we did in 9,000 frames • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1WZjONEjKk
Summary of achievements • A Java implementation of the 3g-bridge is currently deployed in the EELA-2 certification infrastructure • Plug-ins for both gLite and OurGrid • Initial testing campaign is under way • A C++ implementation of the OurGrid plug-in is currently being tested by the EDGeS team • Some security issues still need to be addressed • Submitting jobs with appropriate user certificate
Win-win collaboration • The EELA-2 project is very pleased with the outcome of this cooperation with the EDGeS project • Following the 3G bridge approach allowed us to leverage on efforts carried out in the EDGeS project, giving EELA-2 users immediate interoperation with other grid middleware • Our implementation is another proof-of-concept that can be added to the 3G-bridge portfolio • This is especially interesting when one takes into account the differences between OurGrid and the other desktop grid middleware target by the EDGeS project • At the same time that it gives evidence of the generality of the approach it offers users a different “flavour” of service-desktop grid interoperability • A Java implementation of the 3G bridge technology increases the possibility of adoption of the technology by other infrastructure providers • The fact that our implementation is based on a CREAM CE complements the EDGeS implementation based on LCG CE • Our experience deploying our development in the EELA-2 infrastructure has shown that it can be done in a very smooth way
