Feeding Weanlings • Avoid growth slumps and spurts • Make weaning stress-free
Feeding Weanlings • Free-choice high quality forage • Alfalfa/grass works best • More grain needed with lower quality forage
Feeding Weanlings • ~ 1.5 lb/mo of age of grain • At 6 to 12 months, no more than 10 lb/day of grain • Oats and hay are not adequate
Feeding Weanlings • Should be maintained in moderate body condition score (5) • Excess weight gain increases risk of DOD • Allow free exercise – strengthens bone
Feeding Yearlings • Growth rate slows • Lower nutrient concentration • Can consume more feed
Feeding Yearlings • High quality hay or pasture available – may not need grain • But still need mineral supplement • If questionable forage – need grain
Feeding Two-Year-Olds • Growth has slowed • Requirements still higher than mature horse • High quality hay or pasture available – may not need grain
Feeding Two-Year-Olds • Training – increases requirements • Grain – no more than 10 lb/day • If not in heavy training – can feed similar to yearlings • Heavier training usually requires grain
Wood Chewing • Housed in dry lot, soft woods (pine) • Damage to facilities • Generally doesn’t harm the horse • But small risk of: • Mouth infections, dental wear, GIT irritation/impaction • Development of cribbing habit
