Epic Devices • Poet opens by stating the theme, invoking the muse, and opening in the action. • Poet includes catalogs of warriors, ships, armies, etc. • Extended formal speeches are made by the main characters. • Poet makes frequent use of the epic (heroic) simile. • Epic simile: an elaborate comparison, involved and ornate. It is also called an extended or Homeric simile. • Compare heroic or epic events to simple and easy to understand everyday events.

  3. Characteristics of an Epic 1. Includes a physically impressive hero of national or historical importance

  4. Traits of an Epic Hero • A main character • His legendary or heroic actions are central to his culture, race, or nation • A larger-than-life hero who embodies the values of a particular society • An epic hero is superhuman (in a sense). He is braver, stronger, smarter, and cleverer than an ordinary person is. He is of mixed divine and human birth and possesses human weaknesses. • The epic hero is on a quest for something of great value. • The epic hero fights monsters. • The epic hero returns home significantly transformed by his journey. • In his journey, the epic hero covers great geographical distances and even visits the underworld, other worlds, and/ or other times.
