  1. DNR Data for Comprehensive Planning Shannon Fenner, DNR Statewide Land Use Team Leader

  2. DNR’s Geographic Data Overview • DNR Enterprise Data: • Support a broad range of business needs throughout DNR and externally • Managed by Enterprise Data Management section (EDM) of BEITA • DNR Program Data: • Developed primarily to fulfill certain regulatory responsibilities or to provide specific customer services • DNR program data custodians often have different approaches to managing and providing access to their information

  3. Statewide Land Use Team • Identified data/info for Comprehensive Plans • Working with Aquatic & Terrestrial Resources Inventory (ATRI) staff • Land Use web site

  5. Available Information DNR Internet • Land Use Web Page - Under Construction • http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/es/science/landuse/index.htm • Element Guidance documents (Coming Soon!) • Paragraph explaining why the datasets were recommended for each of the specified elements • One dataset might have different reasons for being important to various elements

  7. Click Planning Data and Maps

  8. Click DNR Data Lists for Comprehensive Planning

  9. Click the Dataset Name you would like to see guidance for

  10. Click here for Metadata and complete Contact Information

  11. Future Trends: Information Distribution • ArcIMS (Arc Internet Map Server) • Provides interactive mapping (not data access) through the use of internet explorer • Ability to view recommended datasets and print pagesize maps • Advantages: • Easy to use • No GIS software needed • Instant information

  12. Future Trends: Information Distribution • File Transfer Protocol (FTP site) • Information put on the server for external download • Land Use CD • Recommended datasets on CD to purchase or download the CD and return it

  13. Aquatic and Terrestrial Resources Inventory(ATRI) ATRI Project Lead: Erin Crain ATRI Development Lead: Jeff Shaw

  14. ATRI Vision • ATRI is a public and private partnership to gather, link, and make available data used for decisions affecting Wisconsin’s landscape.

  15. ATRI AQUATIC & TERRESTRIAL RESOURCES INVENTORY What is it? A web based application designed to facilitate identification, inventory, storage, and distribution of aquatic and terrestrial related data. Currently used as a metadata repository for environmental data

  16. ATRI Types of Data Found in ATRI • Tables and databases • GIS data layers • Images • Summary reports • Web site links • Applications • Others . . .?

  17. Inventory Data Model • BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES • PHYSICAL RESOURCES • CULTURAL RESOURCES • POLLUTION MONITORING

  20. Additional Considerations • Presently available only on DNR’s intranet • Contains mainly information about data, not data itself • ATRI is currently under review, which has slowed development

  21. How Can ATRI Help Comprehensive Planning? 1) Data searches facilitated by DNR Staff 2) Decision support tools 3) ArcIMS site - under development
