  1. Friction homework handout

  2. Q1 • At a wedding reception, you notice a small boy running part way across the dance floor, then sliding on his knees until he stops. You estimate his mass as 25 kg. Of the kinetic coefficient of friction between the pants and the floor is 0.15, what is the frictional force acting on him as he slides?

  3. Q2 • You push a 13 kg table in a cafeteria with a horizontal force of 20 N, but it does not move. You then push it with a horizontal force of 25 N and it accelerates at 0.26 m/s2. What, if anything, can you conclude about the coefficient of static and kinetic friction between the table and the floor?

  4. Q3 • A 1.25 kg box is being pulled across a level surface where the µK is 0.80. If the string is suddenly cut, causing the applied force to immediately go to 0.0N, what is the rate of acceleration of the block?

  5. Q4 • If the velocity of the box in Q4 was initially at 5.0 m/s, what will be its speed after 0.50 s? • How far will it travel in that time interval?
