  1. LHeC area The LHeC in 2010 Max Klein Steering Group Report -for discussion- Convenors and Steering Group Meeting 20.5.2010 at CERN J.Osborne/A.Kosmicki 16.2.2010

  2. Recall our previous meeting December 15th 2009, minutes 13.1.10 QCD mini-workshop at DESY, April 8thQCD+Electroweak part of the CDR DIS10 at Florence and EVO: 8 talks, Anna’s nights and Paul’s masterpiece Regular bi-weekly LHeCDesign Meetings (every other Tuesday), so far 7 Monthly contacts with CERN directorate [LHeC Notes, invitations, status, SPC..] Invitations to Conferences (NuPECC town meeting Madrid, ICHEP Paris, EIC, ECFA) 561: up to 6 offices and this meeting room Divonne III (28.10.-30.10.10) It is now time to write the CDR. This meeting is to discuss and agree on its basics. Some Developments in 2010

  3. The machine will be designed for 60 GeV, polarised, e± using 100MW wall plug. Ring: Injector at 10 GeV. RF layed out to achieve up to 70 GeV. LINAC: 3 passes through two 10 GeVLINACs with ERL return. This allows a direct comparison of the two options. They have somewhat different p beam optimisations but use the same basic p beam assumptions. The goal is to freeze the parameters after IPAC next week. This is required in order for all related technical chapters to be written. The LINAC chapter will contain an option for a pulsed 140 GeV LINAC. There will also be a mentioning of a 60 GeV pulsed LINAC. ERL at 60 GeV is the only realistic (?) way to achieve a luminosity in the 1033 cm-2s-1 range. Both RR and LR interaction region designs have a version for low x acceptance. The Machine

  4. Draft 0.3 by 15.7. [30.6.?] Draft 1.0 by 15.9. 9/10 - time for referees and updates Draft 2.0 by 15.11. ECFA Final by 15.2.2011 Out/printed for DIS11 Shall we inform community about the final date to send in contributions [1.9.2010?] as LHeC Notes or in direct contact, besides the authors we know.? Editors: Oliver, Stefano, Max Title page

  5. Proposed chapter authors/editors -for discussion- John D, Paul N Max, Oliver, Stefano [next page] Olaf, Claire, Thomas, Paolo [today] Emmanuelle, Georges, Georg [today?] Anna, Brian, Nestor, Paul N [today] John J [tocOliver,Max 2/10, today] Frank [tocOliver,Max 2/10, today] Bernhard/Uwe [today] Pierre, Sergey [perhaps part of Uwes talk] Alessandro/Peter/Rainer [today] Chapters A chapter should be sth. like 20-60 pages. The proportion has to be about obeyed between the RR and LR and between the 3 main physics chapters. Overall want 300-500 pages. Use LHeC Notes!

  6. 3. Design Considerations We have simulated data sets for 50, 100 and 150 GeV, from 2009. The machine will focus on 60 GeV and a 140 GeV design. I propose to stick to what we did although that is a small inconsistency.

  7. With CERN there is an agreement that the directorate appoints referees at a time that they can influence the CDR. Thus they have to act in September/October and better be informed soon. With such a time schedule they are discussion partners to help getting things right and not overlooked. We don’t need advice for every single problem here. We should ‘use’ the advisory committee members. A question Is whether we go for specific advice, as magnets or so, but this we will have to look for anyhow.? Executive Summary: Yang-Kee Kim, Sergio Bertolucci + Steve Myers Physics: QCD – Guido Altarelli and Alan Martin Electroweak – Chris Quigg + BSM – John Ellis +? HPD – someone from ALICE? Ring: FerdiWilleke Linac: ReinhardBrinkmann IR: Daniel Pitzl, Ilan Ben Zvi Detector: Wesley Smith, Roland Horisberger Please think of subjects and names, this is discussed with no one so far, but CERN needs a proposal. Not to be quoted. Perhaps we want to engage the younger and not the elder generation? Proposal for Referees

  8. Appendices Oliver, John J, Frank Karlhubert, Bernhard, Max Cost: will be evaluated by Steve Myers’ representative.

  9. Fournier – “The physics case has to be clear” - SPC SAC to help reviewing and advertising this [John] LHeC Notes: Tijtske. LHeC-ACC-[PHY/GEN/INT]-nr-201k? Biggest concern: IR designs CDR and LoI or who signs the CDR Preparations for a TDR  CERN needs to take over the initiative/organisation Since the LHC ages, there is a certain time window 2020+ unless one goes for the energy upgraded LHC 2030+ that, however, belongs to a different world. Last meeting: 15.12.09: The whole plan outlined there is still in place (compare minutes sent 13.1.10), however, not much is written yet and the number of seminars was small, I think. Remarks

  11. Thank you for all the efforts and those now needed. It is time we get this done and done well.
