  3. Strategies of Withdrawal Effective • When emotions are high • Need to buy time to think about issues Ineffective • Postponing make matters worse • Important decisions are not made

  4. Strategies of forcing Effective • When individual is right and goals are important • Time to make decision is short Ineffective • Conflict can enlarge • Retaliation from other individual may occur

  5. Strategy of Smoothing Effective • Working toward a common goal is important • Preserve positive relations with individual Ineffective • Your ideas do not get attention • Your influence may decrease

  6. Strategy of Compromising Effective • Use when goals are of moderate importance • Time is important and reach agreement on parts of both parties Ineffective • May not work if initial demands are high • Important values and long term goals can be lost

  10. Active Listening Throughout Process • Attend:face speaker and maintain eye contact. • Be silent and listen for content & feeling. • Avoid pre-planning a response and interruptions. • Paraphrase to show understanding. • Askquestions to understand.

  11. Specific Process to Resolve Conflict Collaboratively • C – Clarify issue to be resolved • A – Address the problem: Emphasize you want to solve • L – Listen to other side • M – Work conflict to ideas to solve the issue and agree on solution
