  1. LTC2.1-5 Notes

  2. Heat and Temperature • All particles are always in motion, even in solids. • Kinetic energy= The energy of motion. • Heat= a measure of the total kinetic energy of the molecules in a system. • Heat energy is the energy that causes the particles of a substance to move faster.

  3. The faster the particles move, the higher the temperature of the substance becomes. • Temperature= the measure of the average energy of motion (the average kinetic energy) of all the particles in a substance.

  4. Conservation of Matter • Law of Conservation of Matter= Matter cannot be created or destroyed. • During both physical and chemical changes, there is no overall increase or decrease in the quantity of the matter that is changing. • The law of conservation is applied to matter, energy, and mass.

  5. Chemical Reactions • Chemical reaction= A change in which a substance (or substances) is changed into one or more new substances. • There are reactants and products in every chemical reaction. • Reactant= The original substances that are changed. • Product= The new substances that are formed. • Reactant A + Reactant B= Product A + Product B

  6. Draw the following table and fill it out to the best of your ability for the reaction demonstrated.

  7. Signs of a chemical reaction • There are 5 signs of a chemical reaction: • 1) Color change • 2) Temperature change • 3) Production of a gas (fizz or bubbles) • 4) Production of light • 5) Formation of a solid from 2 or more liquids • Are the properties of the products of a chemical reaction the same as the properties of the reactants?
